  Muzzle Brakes
A muzzle brake is a sleeve fitted to the end of an artillery barrel to reduce the recoil when the gun fires.
An unfortunate consequence of the use of muzzle brakes is the increase in the amount of sideways blast that the crew is subjected to.
The muzzle brake is constructed of several steel baffle plates shaped to allow the projectile to escape yet capture a large proportion of the following gases.

Muzzle brake - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A muzzle brake or compensator is a device that is fitted to the muzzle of a firearm or cannon to redirect propellant gases with the effect of countering both recoil of the gun and unwanted rising of the barrel during rapid fire.
Muzzle brakes are very useful for combat and timed competition shooting, and are commonly found on rifles firing very large cartridges (often big-game rifles), as well as some artillery and tank guns.
Muzzle brakes were ruled "legal" by the BATF in the United States a short time after the now defunct Federal assault weapons ban went into effect in 1994.

 U.S. Patent: 5020416 - Muzzle brake for firearms - June 4, 1991
No. 4,392,413 of Gwinn, Jr., discloses a muzzle attachment for a firearm barrel which functions both as a muzzle brake to reduce recoil of the firearm and is a compensator to reduce upward movement or muzzle jump of the muzzle portion of the firearm barrel when the firearm is fired.
It is another feature of this invention to provide a novel muzzle brake mechanism which essentially provides for muzzle deflection and increase in the period of the gas pulse after exit of the bullet without affecting or negating the recoil reaction of muzzle jump and rearward movement that occurs before bullet exit.
Among the various features of this invention is contemplated the provision of a muzzle brake device incorporating an expansion chamber for re-vectoring gases in a rearwardly direction, lengthens the effective time period for gas energy transmission and increases the velocity of the vectored gases.

Gun muzzle brake - Patent 5811714
A muzzle brake which may be integrally formed on the end of a gun barrel or it may be an adapter which is threadably attached to substantially the end of any gun barrel of choice.
The muzzle brake of claim 1 wherein each said pair of opposingly spaced apart vertical vent ports have an overall length which is substantially equal to one half of said outside diameter.
This invention relates to gun muzzle brakes but more particularly to a gun muzzle brake which may be either integrally formed on the end of a gun barrel or it may be an integrally formed threaded adapter for attachment to a gun barrel, and provides reduced recoil and reduced vertical lift.

The muzzle blast from a powerful muzzle brake equipped rifle is so loud that even with hearing protection the shooter risks suffering some permanent hearing damage after a few shots.

Muzzle brake for medium or large caliber cannons (US5675107)
The muzzle brake has a body whose inner dimensions are substantially greater than those of the barrel and which is fitted with at least one stage of two openings prolonged by vanes upon which the propellant gases are applied to create a force in the opposite direction to that generated by these gases.
The muzzle brake comprises a tubular component prolonging the free end of the barrel, that is engaged in the body and pierced with several vents directing the propellant gases towards the vanes.
The diameter of the tubular component is roughly between the caliber of the barrel and the diameter at the bottom of the rifling grooves of the barrel.

Benchrest Central Forums - Threading for a muzzle brake
Depending upon what kind of brake you are using, I install the brake on the new muzzle brake threads without disturbing the threading setup and bore the exit hole on the brake with a boring bar to make it concentric with the bore.
I have never seen a muzzle brake used in a benchrest match probably because of some accuracy degradation and the fact that brakes are not needed.
There is no accuracy degradation if the bore of the brake is concentric with the bore in the barrel at the muzzle and at least.015 total clearance for bullet to pass.

Proper muzzle brake for IS-2 - FileFront Gaming Forums
A muzzle brake is a device that directs the gases exiting behind the shell into a direction where they help minimize the effects of the inertia of the recoil.
Think of it as when the gun fires the recoil pushes the gun backwards very hard, but the muzzle brake directs the gases almost like a rocket would be used to slow down or brake the reward travel, thus minimizing the amount of recoil felt in the vehicle.
The unusual muzzle brake was intended to reduce the main disadvantage of any muzzle brake: when a shot is fired, a large cloud of dust is kicked up from the ground, revealing the position of the tank.

 AK-47.net: Slant Muzzle Brake
There are two versions of the slant muzzle brake, both of which are designed to eliminate felt recoil and reduce muzzle climb.
The brake attaches to the gun via threads at the end of the barrel, similar to the head of a garden hose.
The slant brake works by deflecting the gases upwards causing the muzzle of the rifle to be pushed back down, their for eliminating muzzle rise.

OPS INC - Muzzle Brake Installation Procedure
The brake should be tight on the barrel to eliminate any chance of the brake causing vibration to the barrel.
The rear of the brake should have firm contact with the barrel at the thread shoulder area, this is best acquired if you relieve the thread at the shoulder area.
It is imperative that the rear shoulder of the brake firmly contacts the shoulder of the barrel.

Muzzle brakes were able to be fitted to all M36s except the first 600, since these early vehicles lacked the new equilibrator, stronger elevation mechanism, and stronger gun travel lock that were prerequisites for muzzle brake installation.

The internal bore of the muzzle brake should slip over the barrel with a tight fit, or you'll have to shim it.
Dynasystems can make brakes with custom internal bores and set screws, and they also have an adapter which has set screws to attach to the barrel, and has 14mmx1LH threads so that you can thread a muzzle brake to the adapter.
Set screw muzzle brakes are the cheapest way to do it (usually), but they have the problem that the gases they redirect also cause them to slip off the barrel and fling them down the range, especially with the 7.62 caliber guns.
