Loveless Review | My Bloody Valentine | Reviews @ Ultimate-Guitar.Com
My Bloody Valentine were the premier band to emerge from the late '80s/early '90s "shoegazer" movement.
My Bloody Valentine's music is definitive of the shoegazer movement; however, I will attempt to describe the sound for those who are unfamiliar with the term.
As with a lot of early-'90s indie records, My Bloody Valentine's sound relied heavy upon heavy distortion, which seemed to be almost swirling.

My Bloody Valentine's entire career has been aiming toward the perfect guitar noise that Kevin Shields has in his head: a pure, warm, androgynous but deeply sexual rush of sound.
My Bloody Valentine spent the mid- to late-80's expanding upon the feedback-drenched, murky sonic wash developed by bands like Cocteau Twins and The Jesus and Mary Chain with an LP and a series of EPs that were largely ignored by critics and fans.
My Bloody Valentine's third record Loveless is a sweeping swath through the halls of stand out art music that will forever be tried (ie Evanescence) but never duplicated in full or even part.

My Bloody Valentine's (MBV) Loveless represents all that is well and good in music, but things haven't been well and good for the band in 1999.
MBV, otherwise known as Kevin Shields, has not released an album since Loveless in 1999, and rumors about him have reached a mythic grandeur only surpassed by the death of Paul and the rebirth of Tupac.
Although MBV does not stray far from the traditional rock music instruments—guitar, bass, drums, and sometimes sampler—the meticulous layering of sound gives the music a dreamy and cyclical feel.

My Bloody Valentine is without a doubt, one of those few diamonds in the rough (along with F13 4 and The Prowler).
They've ignored the warnings and even though the annual dance was canceled, a group of locals decide to have their own party in the mine.
The film is bloody, but not too bloody and never seems excessive (probably another reason the film manages to play off as more than just a cheap knock off).

The DVD Journal | Quick Reviews: My Bloody Valentine   (Site not responding. Last check: )
The quiet mining town of Valentine's Bluff is gearing up for its first Valentine's Day dance in 20 years — a tradition previously abandoned after a psychotic miner went on a murderous spree and promised to return for more should the locals ever dare plan another Feb. 14th celebration.
The rough, working-class milieu of Valentine's Bluff is a welcome change from the standard lot of murdered preppies popular to this genre, and the inexperienced cast of believably cretinous provincials adds some flavor to a highly formulaic series of ersatz shocks and gruesome (and occasionally imaginative) gougings.
My Bloody Valentine has been preserved far better than it deserves, and Paramount presents it in a surprisingly clean anamorphic transfer (1.85:1) with the original mono soundtrack (DD 2.0).

It was on several tours in support of Loveless that My Bloody Valentine really served notice of its intent to challenge audience endurance: sets that began at earplug-oxidizing volume escalated precipitously, culminating in an epic dissertation on a single chord — a D to be precise — that often passed the 20-minute mark.
The limit-pushing evidently took a lot out of My Bloody Valentine: although a third full album has been rumored to be near completion several times, nothing has been heard from the trailblazing band since.

This is perhaps the time to correct a common misconception about My Bloody Valentine: I’ve seen a number of reviews that insist that the characters hold their party in the mine; when in fact they hold it in the recreation room at the mine, which is rather different.
The premise of My Bloody Valentine has some originality about it (which would last all of nine months, at which point it would be ripped off wholesale by The Prowler); and if we can’t judge the special effects in their entirety, at least what remains is enjoyably gruesome.
