Topic: My Century

In the News (Sat 28 Nov 09)

  My Century - Aleksander Wat
My Century differs from those books that usually bear the name "Recollections" or "Memoirs." Because this book belongs to a separate literary genre -- the tape-recorded conversation -- its value as a source of information is arguably greater.
My Century consists of the transcripts of conversations Milosz had with Wat starting in 1965, specifically for the purpose of creating such a 'memoir' (because of illness Wat was unable to write as he would have liked).
My Century is an interesting document of how the intellectual was treated in Stalinist times, specifically the Polish experience, which was slightly different than and not quite as comprehensively horrible as the Soviet one (despite Wat also spending time in Soviet jails).

My First Century, by Eddy Keller
My kids had depleted my Nice Light so I spent 2 miles praying I wouldn't taco my wheel in a pothole (great way to start and end one's first century), or get hit by a car.
My first introduction to my fellow traveler was when they passed and a bark from the dog startled the hell out of me. I am not really fond of dogs while cycling and this encounter did little to change that.
My stomach still was grousing, I didn't feel as good climbing as I had in training, and I was starting to feel like I had ridden more that the 37+ miles my odometer showed.

New Century Charter High School Students
The staff at New Century knows that the life of a student can be a stressful one especially with the drama that every high school has, so when kids are having a bad day or get mad about something they can go to the Dean's office and punch the punching bag.
From the beginning of my ninth grade year I had the opportunity to learn through projects of my own design and to work closely with the teacher to create a method of learning that suited my learning style.
When people ask me, as they often have, if I like my high school, I always tell them that the student experience at a high school is only as good as the school’s teachers, and for that reason, yes, I do, because I have had some very good teachers at New Century.

My friends and I will be riding (with a bigger group, I'm sure) again next year primarily to see the things I am sure we missed this year.
Although I lived in the city for most of my 57 years, it was only on the NYC Century Bike Tour that I got to go through neighborhoods that I had never been to before in my life.
I'm going to tell my colleagues at the CCCP (Citizen Cyclists of Pamplona) that they should have come, so they could have seen the spectacle of so many people on bikes, so they could have seen how organized it was, how well run the rest stops were.

Amazon.com: My Century: A Novel: Books: Gunter Grass   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-03)
His My Century is comprised of 100 short chapters, one for each year of the 20th century, each told by a different narrator.
And of course, since Grass is German, the century he refers to is German as well--a fact that could prove a little daunting to readers not familiar with the intricacies of that country's history.
"My Century" is the easiest of Grass's novels to read, but specifically because of the scope of its subject matter it is bigger than any that Grass has ever before tackled it seems to be a bit superficial.

My Century | The A.V. Club
Grass' "my" represents the collective voice of the German people (which, of course, at times includes Grass), who relate the last century in short, year-by-year segments.
Generally, each chapter is told by a different person, a different "I," and the subject of each discourse shifts to reflect each character's perspective on the events transpiring around him or her.
Yet in terms of Grass' technical grasp of time, as well as his novel method of approaching the past (through letters, flashbacks, anecdotes, and autobiography), the book is an interesting summation of the 1900s, a century marked as much by war and regret as it was by hope and humanity.

Salon Books | "My Century" by Günter Grass
Günter Grass' new novel, "My Century," is a pastiche of 100 little stories rooted in the political surges of Germany's violent and fascinating past 100 years.
"My Century" tells the saga of German history since 1900 in a noisy fugue of voices, with each brief chapter assigned a single year.
"My Century" remains a beguiling people's history of Germany as long as Grass resists his urge to go on record with moral and political stances.
