"My Country, 'Tis of Thee," also known as "America," is an American patriotic song.
The same melody is the national anthem of Liechtenstein and has served as an anthem for Denmark, Germany, Russia, Sweden and Switzerland.
The lyrics to "My Country, 'Tis of Thee" were written in 1831 by Reverend Samuel Francis Smith of Boston's Park Street Church while at the Andover Theological Seminary in Andover, Massachusetts.

Yet it is we who suffer most, we, the richest part of whose country is in the hands of the foe, we whose industries are paralysed, my country from whom the life-blood is being slowly drained.
Then the very pick-pockets and cut-throats of my country are to be worshipped by your wise men as being Gods: for there is not one of them that does not see as much as you see now.
I don't want anything of your country, except to be let alone,--to go peaceably out of it; and when I get to Canada, where the laws will own me and protect me, that shall be my country, and its laws I will obey.

Si Vis Pacem, Para Bellum: MY COUNTRY TIS OF THEE
I cannot describe to you my feelings on this calm summer night, when two thousand men are sleeping around me, many of them enjoying the last, perhaps, before that of death -- and I, suspicious that Death is creeping behind me with his fatal dart, am communing with God, my country, and thee.
A pure love of my country and of the principles have often advocated before the people and "the name of honor that I love more than I fear death" have called upon me, and I have obeyed.
Sarah, my love for you is deathless, it seems to bind me to you with mighty cables that nothing but Omnipotence could break; and yet my love of Country comes over me like a strong wind and bears me irresistibly on with all these chains to the battlefield.

These words were born because Smith’s friend,, could not read German. Mason had received several German hymnals, and sent them to Smith, who he knew understood German. In one of them, Smith ran across the tune now used for My Country ’Tis of Thee.
All at once the trading on the floor ceased, and from the wheat-pit came the familiar words, “My country ’tis of thee.” After two stanzas had been sung, Dr. Smith arose and bowed.
Then they opened a passage through the crowd and led him to the wheat-pit, where they took off their hats and sang the rest of the hymn.

My native country, thee, land of the noble free, thy name I love; I love thy rocks and rills, thy woods and templed hills; my heart with rapture thrills, like that above.
Our fathers' God, to thee, author of liberty, to thee we sing; long may our land be bright with freedom's holy light; protect us by thy might, great God, our King.

Although Smith is most well know for this hymn that took him less than thirty minutes to compose, there are 150 other hymns that flowed from his pen.
Samuel Francis Smith was obviously a skilled and inspired man. Yet his most admirable trait is his devotion to God and country.
He begins "My country ‘tis of thee sweet land of liberty, of thee I sing." But notice how gently and sweetly he concludes the hymn.

The Story of the song, America
Sometimes known by its first line, My Country, 'tis of Thee, this song was written in 1832 by the Reverend Samuel F. Smith.
Some references give 1831 as the date, but by Samuel Smith's own testimony, they are not correct.
The only real curiosity is why, with so many uses of the tune (arising from its use by the British), Smith only discovered it when reading the German music books.

 My Country, 'Tis of Thee
Moved deeply by the desire to create a national hymn that would allow the American people to offer praise to God for our wonderful land, a twenty-four-year-old theological student, Samuel Francis Smith, penned these lines on a scrap of paper in less than thirty minutes in 1832.
Yet even today many consider "My Country, 'Tis of Thee" their favorite patriotic hymn and call it our "unofficial national anthem."
Samuel Smith was truly a distinctive representative of both his country and his God.
