In fact, Ford never originally had a kiss at the end of "My Darling Clementine." Test audiences in 1946 were supposed to have tittered when Wyatt Earp left his love Clementine(Cathy Downs) with a handshake and so a parting kiss was later shot and edited in.
In this feature it is talked about how the students in the seventies at UCLA had gotten a print of "My Darling Clementine" from the MGM studios and noticed that it was different from the widely distributed film of that movie.
There is a commentary by Scott Eyman and Wyatt Earp III on the original and widely distributed version of "My Darling Clementine." It is kind of confusing, but the widely released, "edited" version is considered the original.

The most famous and sublime treatment of the gunfight at the O.K. Corral, John Ford's My Darling Clementine is by any measure one of the most classically perfect Westerns ever made.
Though the film reaches its climax in the legendary gunfight between the Earps (with Doc Holliday) and the Clantons, the most powerful moment is the moving Sunday morning church social played out on the floor of the unfinished church.
As Earp dances with Clementine (Cathy Downs) -- Fonda's stiff, self-conscious movements showing a man unaccustomed to such social interaction -- Ford's camera frames them against the open sky: the town and the wilderness merge into the new Eden of the West for a brief moment.

filmcritic.com Movie Review: My Darling Clementine
John Ford’s 1946 classic My Darling Clementine is finally on DVD -- and it’s the next best thing to watching a restored print on the big-screen.
On the surface Clementine is the story of Wyatt Earp (Henry Fonda) and Doc Holliday (Victor Mature) joining forces to shoot it out with Old Man Clanton (Walter Brennan) and his sons at the OK Corral in 1881.
Like the common but popular song on which the title is based, My Darling Clementine is about how a town lives, how normal people and their everyday lives are creating a rite of passage and changing an era in America.

Although My Darling Clementine involves the story of Wyatt Earp, Doc Holiday and their gunfight with the Clantons at the O.K. Corral, John Ford's focus is at least as much on mood and relationships as it is on gunplay.
The arrival of Clementine Carter evokes in Holliday all manner of memories, frustrations, disappointments, regrets, etc. She also complicates his relationships with the Earps as well as with Chihuahua (Linda Darnell).
It's unfortunate for all of us that the people who probably decide on which movies at the major studios are to be converted to DVD are either ignorant of what the public wants or their inability to sit still and watch a fl and white movie.

My Darling Clementine   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
One of the greatest movie Westerns, John Ford's My Darling Clementine is hardly the most accurate film version of the Wyatt Earp legend, but it is still one of the most entertaining.
The tensions among Wyatt, Doc, Clementine, and Chihauhua wax and wane throughout most of the film, leading to the legendary gunfight at the OK Corral, with Wyatt and Doc fighting side-by-side against the despicable Clantons.
Its powerful storyline and full-blooded characterizations aside, My Darling Clementine is most entertaining during those little "humanizing" moments common to Ford's films, notably Wyatt's impromptu "balancing act" while seated on the porch of the Tombstone hotel, and Wyatt's and Clementine's dance on the occasion of the town's church-raising.

"My Darling Clementine" interprets the famed gunfight not so much as a grudge between stern lawman Wyatt Earp (Henry Fonda) and crafty killer Old Man Clanton (Walter Brennan), but as a soap opera starring self-pitying gambler, gunslinger, lover, saloon owner and doctor John Holliday (Victor Mature).

Given Samuel Engel's terse, elliptical screenplay, Fonda gives a subtle, brilliantly understated performance in the lead role, establishing a naturalist motif that is picked up and furthered by Joseph MacDonald's magnificent, barely lit shots of Ford's beloved Monument Valley.
