My Dinner with Andre - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
My Dinner with Andre is a 1981 movie starring Andre Gregory and Wallace Shawn, written by Gregory and Shawn, and directed by Louis Malle.
Pixar's first animated short—The Adventures of André and Wally B. —was a tribute to the movie.
It would also seem that the last episode of Frasier's first season (My Coffee With Niles) was inspired by it, in the title at least.

 Major John Andre
Andre presented Howe a memoir he had compiled from his observations in "the colonies." Impressed by the young man's abilities, Howe first gave him a captaincy in the 26th Regiment and recommended him as an aide to Major-General Charles Grey.
Andre was present at the Battle of Brandywine, Grey's bloody night raid, known as the Paoli Massacre, the Battle of Germantown, the British occupation of Philadelphia, the Battle of Monmouth, and Grey's brutal raids of 1778 in Massachusetts and New Jersey.
Andre was imprisoned at Tappan, New York, and on September 29, 1780, he was found guilty of being behind American lines "under a feigned name and in a disguised habit." Andre was hanged as a spy at noon on October 2, 1780.

While some may argue that a film such as My Dinner With Andre is not in need of a lavish, extra-laden DVD of the caliber of, say, Armageddon, the fact remains that the film is a long-beloved treasure of art-house cinema; it deserves a better transfer.
My Dinner with Andre is in many ways the ultimate art-house movie: low budget, highly philosophical, and demanding an intellectual audience's unstinting attention.
My Dinner with Andre is a one-of-a-kind film, and its success is unlikely to be repeated.

My Dinner depends on the willingness of the audience to listen to the words being spoken and their ability to conjure images to go along with the adventures being described.
Of course, the ability of André to still be affected by art (late into the evening, he quotes the Bergman film without any irony) shows that his disillusionment is not absolute.
Of course, he provides a more grounded counter-balance to the eccentricities that André offers, but I can’t imagine that most viewers would be able to sympathize wholeheartedly with the simple-minded faux-profundities that he spouts at the end of the film.
