		Clearly, the mother holds the view that television can cause harm to the family in threatening the processes of domestic communication that occur in the home and she has made a conscious effort to avoid excessive use of the television, encouraging the family to participate in the playing of board-games and other group activities instead.
		Much of the family viewing is centred upon their hobbies, and with the exception of the father there is little use of the television outside of these interests.
		As a result of my discussion with the daughter of the family I found that she actually highlighted the programmes she wanted to watch in the television guide in order to establish some form of control over her father's dominance of the medium.

		Throughout television history, then, the representation of the family has been a concern in Congress, among special interest groups and lobbyists, the general audience and, of course, the industry which has attempted to satisfy all of these parties in different ways and with different emphasis.
		We might even speculate that the proliferation and popularity of broken families on television entertainment genres was in some sense a way our society responded to and aesthetically resolved the loss of our nation's father and the dream or nuclear family life that he and Jackie represented at the time.
		Perhaps because these families were extremely wealthy, audiences could view their problems as a symptom of upper-crust decadence rather then a more general failure in American family life experienced by people of all social backgrounds.

		Television in the sixties used the ieal family formula in fantasy shows but these families were totally unique in their members.
		Television families of the seventies were becoming more reality based than they were in the sixties.

		It appears that the increased family contact brought about by television is not social except in the most limited sense: that of being in the same room with other people...the viewing atmosphere in most households is one of quiet absorption in the programs on the part of the family members who are present.
