My Neighbor Totoro - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Totoro is Mei's mispronunciation of torōru, the Japanese version of the English word troll.
The final encounter with Totoro in the film occurs when Mei, distraught when she learns that their mother's visit home has been cancelled due to apparent worsening conditions (a suspicion which proves to be unfounded), sets off on foot to the hospital and gets lost.
The character of Totoro made a cameo appearance in one episode of the Gainax TV series Kareshi Kanojo no Jijo (His and Her Circumstances), which was likely director Hideaki Anno's way of paying tribute to Miyazaki.

They wake her up, and Mei asks where the Totoro is. She goes running back down the tunnel, only to re-emerge a moment later a few feet from where she entered, the pathway she had taken earlier now gone...
Surprised to see the Totoro, who is wearing a large leaf on his head, she offers him her father’s umbrella so he will not get (any more) wet.
Totoro takes her to the top of the camphor tree and calls out for the neko-bus, which bounds across the countryside and jumps to the top of the tree.

For the girls, this forest is a portal into a world of adventure and the home to fantastic woodland spirits including their large, furry neighbour, Totoro.
Unlike the enraged wolf spirits of Mononoke, Totoro and co are warm, friendly and welcoming.
My Neighbor Totoro is yet another outstanding Studio Ghibli creation and for a film made in 1988, it is still fresh and vibrant as the day a human hand applied paint to each individual animation cel.

Kazzie's Place :: My Neighbour Totoro
My Neighbour Totoro is an animated film by Hayao Miyazaki, who is one of the greatest animators and directors in Japan.
There are three Totoro's, Chibi Totoro - a small white one, Chu Totoro - a medium sized, blue one, and O Totoro - an extremely large one.
Totoro is a little deeper in meaning and theme, but isn't as disturbing or "wierd" as other anime, and there's no violence at all (so deviating from the percieved Anime norm).

Totoro is not based on any exact Japanese mythological or folk character, but does spring from the idea of nature spirits in Japanese culture.
When Mei tells Satsuki about seeing a Totoro, Satsuki says "You mean like in our book?" In the closing credits the girls are shown in bed with their mother as she reads a book to them.
The area where Totoro occurs is fictitious, but is supposed to be in the rural area just outside of Tokyo in the early 1950s.

 My Neighbour Totoro Review
Already an artist working at the height of his powers in 1988, "My Neighbor Totoro" showcases Miyazaki's delightful iconography of spirits, demons, and wood sprites at their most gentle.
Suitable even for the youngest demographic, "My Neighbor Totoro" tells the story of Satsuki and Mei, two sisters who move into a haunted house to be near their sick mother who is in the hospital.
During this difficult time, wood creatures and spirits come to their aid, including the Totoro, a furry, egg-shaped cross between a rabbit and a bear with a wicked roar.

MY NEIGHBOUR TOTORO is squarely aimed at small children, whom I am sure will enjoy it a lot.
Meandering about somewhat aimlessly, a plot of sorts only kicks in about fifteen minutes before the end of the movie when the girls receive a disquieting telegram regarding their mother who is in hospital for an unspecified ailment.
In fact my wife cried a tear or two during the movie — and I can’t remember the last animated effort that elicited that kind of response from anyone.

The premise behind My Neighbour Totoro (or Tonari no Totoro as it is known in Japan) is a relatively simple one that will require an open mind to fully appreciate.
My Neighbour Totoro maintains the now standard Studio Ghibli design which features a letterboxed image on the front cover with a coloured border, adorned on which are the various film and studio logos.
Depending on the film the quality of dubtitles varies, fortunately My Neighbour Totoro is blessed by the fact it is hardly a dialogue heavy film, and thanks to a decent English Dub script the dubtitles are generally forgivable with only the occasional faults of extra dialogue and expanded dialogue rearing their ugly heads.
