My Own Private Idaho - A Critical Analysis
My Own Private Idaho is not a genre film, per se, but it is a formula film in the fact that there is a main character (Mike) who is searching for a long-lost relative.
At first, My Own Private Idaho seems to be a simple and straightforward story, but as previously mentioned it is quite complex and involved.
My Own Private Idaho contains prostitution and shades of homosexuality, and was made during a time when one of the most deadly diseases in the world can be transmitted by sexual contact.

My Own Private Idaho, like many arthouse movies, did not enjoy a wide release but did garner its share of critical acclaim, particularly for the photography and the performances by the actors.
My Own Private Idaho has no direct relation to the song "Private Idaho" by the B-52's, but Van Sant does thank the group in the end credits.

My Own Private Idaho - DVD Movie Central
My Own Private Idaho was director Gus Van Sant's follow-up to his critically acclaimed Drugstore Cowboy (and by all accounts, the movie he really wanted to make first).
The trek goes through Idaho (of course), and ends up in Italy where a chance meeting with a beautiful Italian girl (Caselli) snaps Scott out of his charade and back to the man he was born to be (which may not have been the best thing for him).
My Own Private Idaho is worth seeing for the career-defining performance by the late River Phoenix, despite the indulgences of Van Sant that frequently try the patience.

Many cinemaphiles make it a practice not to read anything more than a plot synopsis when choosing what to see, so their expectations are not influenced, and so they can make up their own minds whether it was any good.
Donald Lyons goes as far as to call it "The best American movie of the Nineties!" (A specious designation, to be sure, considering the decade has only lasted two years.) Petty college-paper reviewers such as myself easily second-guess their judgement when they find themselves dissenting from the majority opinion.
Manohla Dargis of the Village Voice derides any "jerk who trounces My Own Private Idaho because the subject of gay hustlers is so, uh, distasteful." I'm sorry, Maohla, but I'm not slamming the film because I might find the gay lifestyle inconsistent with a Christian ethic; it's simply poor filmmaking.

When *My Own Private Idaho* hit the rental shelves of the local movie theater way back in the early 90's, its reputation spread immediately among the young and restless of my small, conservative home-town.
My artist's spirit identified with the wanderlust-yearning and puckish wonder inhabited in the vagabond Scott and Mike - a somewhat-sheltered mind's naïve lust for that opposite of its own experience.
As Fat Bob and Mike's illusions of wealth-an eternal party utterly devoid of street-life cost-unravel, the subsequent denouement is immeasurably augmented by the early 'warmth' of the film, and the steady chill that seeps through the cracks, numbing body and mind, overwhelm its progression until abrupt collapse upon the desolate highway of the ending.

My Own Private Idaho (1991): Reviews
Beautifully wrought, darkly funny and finally devastating, My Own Private Idaho almost single-handedly revives the notion of personal filmmaking in the United States.
The style is so eclectic that it may take some getting used to, but Van Sant, working from his own story for the first time, brings such lyrical focus to his characters and his poetry that almost everything works.
No matter what you've been used to, Idaho is something completely different, a film that manages to confound all expectations, even the ones it sets up itself.

While it might sound like a standard road trip movie, it's anything but, taking turns -- narrative and emotional -- that not only stretch the two young actors to their limits, but which cement Van Sant as one of the riskiest and most daring filmmakers of his generation.

Mike's narcolepsy is triggered during times of strong emotional distress, and Van Sant uses these moments to show off a bit, using strong colors and stark imagery to depict the character's emotional state—a barn falls from the sky to crash on the highway, memories of childhood are glimpsed and replayed, idealized.

River Phoenix in My Own Private Idaho (1991): This Road Will Never End. It Probably Goes All Around the World - ...
At its core "My Own Private Idaho" is a soft and delicate examination of a young man who doesn't have a place in life and is trying to find his way along the beaten path; the road that stretches continually onwards, never ending.
Still, in my opinion, the Shakespeare elements are fairly important to the story and don't really harm it at all.
River Phoenix is extraordinary in the lead role and in my opinion, "My Own Private Idaho" solidified his impressive talents as one of the generation's best young actors.

DVD.net : My Own Private Idaho - DVD Review
Featuring what is arguably the finest performance of River Phoenix’s tragically short career and a remarkably non-dull turn by Keanu Reeves, My Own Private Idaho is the tale of narcolepsy sufferer Mike Waters (Phoenix) and Portland Mayor's son Scott Favour (Reeves); best of friends and indiscriminate street hustlers.
Whilst Scott waits out his inevitable inheritance from his well-off father, with a carefree and degenerate lifestyle, it is the vulnerable Mike and his disjointed quest for his mother that remains the major focus of the film.
Many of the scenes that take place in daylight, be it the sparse Idaho country-side, the beautiful locales of Italy or the streets of Portland, are literally half the images they used to be.

The Criterion Collection: My Own Private Idaho
Released in 1991, Idaho was Van Sant’s third feature film and remains his most anarchic and, in many ways, ambitious.
The main source materials for Idaho’s screenplay were two completely separate scripts and a short story, all written by Van Sant.
Idaho’s fragmented editing style—its heterogeneous visual associations and dense layering of words, sounds, and music—and its split-second shifts between the burlesqued and the heartfelt, evoke Mike’s confusion of inside and outside, past and present, dreams and waking life.
