  Australia - A Convict's Journey
The routine of the ship was arranged so that, during the voyage, the convicts were allowed the liberty of the deck from sunrise until sunset, under an armed guard of three soldiers posted at points of vantage which gave them full surveillance of the tough bunch of derelicts in their charge.
A boatswain and six mates were selected by the surgeon-superintendent from among the convicts, and they were made responsible for the cleanliness and orderliness of their fellows.
The rough treatment of the convicts which resulted from this and other methods of brutal oppression is something which is known to at least a few living people from the talk of their elders, and doubtless there are grandchildren now in the colony who have heard traditional tales of what their forbears suffered.

Convict transportation to the American colonies was effectively ended by the American Declaration of Independence in 1776 which forced England to use the newly "discovered" land of Australia as a dumping ground for convicts.
Oddly enough, my request for a search of Thomas Magner's records, based on an identity of his name with mine and that of my grandson, turned out to be a pure case of serendipity since he was tried and convicted in Mallow, a few miles east of the ancestral Magner estate.

Based simply on reminiscences of his Fort Leavenworth days and his six assistants, it is a Book-of-the-Month Club selection for February and, as it happens, one of the liveliest inside jobs on prison manners and morals to appear in many a year.
Under cover of interior construction work, the convicts wired his office for evidence that he might be some new kind of spy for the warden.
When he needed an Ediphone and saw no way of getting it through the coils of Government red tape inside of six months, his six convicts got one delivered through their outside "connections." For the greater comfort of some of the prisoners, a large radio-phonograph and two refrigerators were smuggled in; so, repeatedly, were prostitutes.

Based on the best-seller about a psychologist who comes to work in a prison, this is an uncommon story of prison life filled with genuine humor and drama.
Six convicts make up the psychologist's staff: a safecracker, an embezzler, a psychopathic killer, an alcoholic taking the rap for a girl, a sensitive romantic, and a guy sentenced for an unarmed holdup.
As the doubting warden looks on, the psychologist works to develop a system for rehabilitating the incarcerated men, and the convicts grow to trust and admire him.

NYERI, Kenya (Reuters) -- The bodies of six Kenyan convicts allegedly beaten to death in a jail break in September were exhumed on Wednesday for post-mortem examinations in one of the country's worst prison scandals.
Police initially said the six were shot dead trying to escape from King'ong'o prison in Nyeri, central Kenya, but a government pathologist said they died after falling off a perimeter wall.
Human rights groups that studied the government post mortem and interviewed a survivor of the escape attempt say the "King'ong'o Six" were tortured to death.
