The Story of My Experiments with Truth - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Story of My Experiments with Truth (available at wikisource) is the autobiography of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (or Mahatma Gandhi) and was first published in two volumes, Volume I in 1927 and Volume II in 1929.
Gandhi found that uncovering the truth was not always popular, as many people were resistant to change, preferring instead to maintain the existing status quo because of inertia, self-interest or misguided beliefs.
My life has been full of tragedies and if they have not left any visible and indelible effect on me, I owe it to the teachings of the Bhagavad Gita.

 Thinking Aloud
My experiments in the political field are now known, not only in India, but to a certain extent to the ‘civilized’ world.
But as I have all along believed that what is possible for one is possible for all, my experiments have not been conducted in the closet, but in the open; and I do not think that this fact detracts from their spiritual value.
The experiments narrated should be regarded as illustrations, in the light of which everyone may carry on his own experiments according to his own inclination and capacity.

It would be outside the scope of these chapters to give a history of my various activities after they came before the public eye, and I must not attempt it, if only because to do so would require a treatise on the subject.
My object in writing these chapters is simply to describe how certain things, as it were spontaneously, presented themselves to me in the course of my experiments with truth.
My vocabulary on the subject was still in process of formation.

To describe truth, as it has appeared to me, and in the exact manner in which I have arrived at it, has been my ceaseless effort.
That is why my devotion to Truth has drawn me into the field of politics; and I can say without the slightest hesitation, and yet in all humility, that those who say that religion has nothing to do with politics do not know what religion means.

The catastrophic fate of European Jewry during the years of National Socialism in Germany and the subsequent calamity of the holocaust for both Jews and other minorities under the Third Reich have continued to press on contemporary thinkers and historians the difficult task of coming to terms with its features.
In the wake of the debates around such violations, new and formidable categories of jurisprudence are emerging in which such notions as transitional justice, global justice, and universal jurisdiction are working to reshape the nature of judicial sovereignty on the one hand and accountability on the other in the post-cold war period.
Experiments with Truth engages with the vicissitudes of the emerging debates around Truth and Reconciliation, new forms of global justice, testimonies and memories of communities.

Contact with Christian missionaries, who poured scorn on Hindu beliefs and encouraged converts to display anti-Hindu behaviour (as a sign of their new beliefs), suggested to him that this was not an example of true faith.

Gandhi's nonviolent struggles in South Africa and India had already brought him to such a level of notoriety, adulation, and controversy that when asked to write an autobiography midway through his career, he took it as an opportunity to explain himself.
His attempts to get closer to this divine power led him to seek purity through simple living, dietary practices (he called himself a fruitarian), celibacy, and ahimsa, a life without violence.
