 Aboriginal History of the Great Lakes Area
In the Great Lakes district there were two tribes - the Biripi, who inhabited the area between Tuncurry, Taree and Gloucester, and the Worimi, who occupied the land between Barrington Tops and Forster in the north and Maitland and the Hunter River in the south.
Captain Cook noticed the presence of Aborigines in the Myall Lakes area when he sailed along the coastline in 1770 and named Cape Hawke.
With the withdrawal of the Australian Agricultural Company from the lakes in 1832 and the arrival of settlers in the Manning Valley in 1831, conditions deteriorated rapidly for the Aborigines.

The Myall Forest is a mountainous reserve which incorporates Cabbage Tree Mountain, the tallest local peak at 660 m, the Strike-a Light Campsite, the remains of the old Blueberry Mill and the Tallowwood Forest Park, where there is a picnic-barbecue site and the 30-minute Carabeen Walk through rainforest gullies.
Continue for 7 km along The Lakes Way and you will come to a turnoff to the left into Coomba Rd which runs around the western shore of Wallis Lake up to the boat ramp and picnic area at Coomba Park, a farming district adjacent the rural tranquillity of Coomba Bay (22 km).

Although lately I've found Smith's lake, further north, and Geroa, down south, to be better windsurfing spots.
The Bombora Broadwater lake where we go is getting a lot weedier later, making windsurfing less enjoyable, you fly off the front when you hit a really thick patch and it's pretty horrible to swim in.

There is a fair climb coming from either direction on The Lakes Way, but it is bitumen and none of it 1st gear stuff.
