  Mycetophilidae
Mycetophilidae is a species-rich family with about 950 species in Europe (Chandler 2004) and more than 3500 described species in the world (Søli et al.

  Mycetophilidae -a/o Catalog
Among the world mycetophiloids, the family Mycetophilidae is the most diversified, with about 3,000 species in 150 genera and at least twice this number of species awaiting description.
Some of the present families of Sciaroidea have long been treated as mere subfamilies of Mycetophilidae, and are still considered as such by many taxonomists.
The phylogeny of the subfamilies of Mycetophilidae is far from being clarified, and several subfamilies are probably polyphyletic.

 Florida Entomologist, v. 81, n. 3, p. 282
Among Diptera, bioluminescence is found only in the Mycetophilidae, but the variety of light organs in fungus gnats suggests multiple evolutions of the trait.
This concentration of bioluminescence may be due to the unusual, sedentary nature of prey capture (i.e., use of webs) that allows the “mimicry” of a stationary abiotic light cue, or the atypically potent defenses webs and associated chemicals might provide (i.e., an aposematic display of unpalatability).
In addition to the luminous Mycetophilidae, there are numerous instances of bioluminescent arthropods isolated from a phyletic history of bioluminescence; i.e., luminescence arising without sharing the genetic heritage of a recent luminous ancestor.
