Born in St. Louis, Missouri, Williamson is of Blackfoot Indian descent, with his first name Mykelti (pronounced Michael Tee) meaning "Spirit/Silent Friend" in the Indian language.
Although Williamson appeared in feature films like Wildcats (1986), Number One with a Bullet (1987), Miracle Mile (1989) and Free Willy (1993), he wouldn't get the recognition he deserved until 1994 when he landed the part of Benjamin "Bubba" Bufford-Blue in the blockbuster film, Forrest Gump.
Married four times, Williamson has been in trouble with the law over conflict with one of his ex-wife's boyfriends.

Mykelti Williamson, who played Tom Hanks' shrimp-happy best pal Bubba in 1994's Forrest Gump, was on the wrong end of a road-rage incident Tuesday morning, when a gun-brandishing motorist allegedly accosted the actor on a downtown Los Angeles street, yelling racial epithets and threatening to shoot Williamson.
Williamson was driving on the 105 Freeway when he purportedly began being tailed by 26-year-old Ernesto Diaz of Los Angeles.
Williamson jotted down the license plate and immediately called the cops, who nabbed Diaz a few miles away and rung him up on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and committing hate crimes.
