Toji Temple, dates from 794, is known for its high pagoda tower (the tallest in Japan) and for its lively flea markets on the 21st of every month.
Headquarters of the Myoshinji school of the Rinzai sect, Myoshinji is a vast, imposing Zen temple complex south of Ryoanji consisting of over forty sub-temples including the beautiful gardens of Taizo-in and Kano school paintings at Reiun-in.
Daikakuji Temple on the western outskirts of Kyoto, to the north of Arashiyama, was originally an Imperial villa of the Emperor Saga, later becoming a temple in the ninth century.

Myoshinji is basically known for its collection of scroll paintings and a zen landscape garden, which I was looking forward too.
The temple, I heard from my guidebook, had a very famous ink scroll painting that I actually learned about in an art history class that I took at NYU, but unfortunately this temple was like a big friggin maze.
This temple complex is known for it's tea ceremony, which isn't something that really interests me...so I just left cause I was starting to get tired and hungry and it was getting late and I was figuring that the temple was going to close soon anyway.

Dedicating themselves to spreading an understanding of Mahayana Buddhism, they lived in a cottage on the Engaku-ji grounds until 1919, then moved to Kyoto, where Suzuki began professorship at Otani University in 1921.
While he was in Kyoto, he visted Dr. Hoseki Shinichi Hisamatsu, a famous Zen Buddhist scholar, and discussed Zen Buddhism together at Shunkoin temple in the Myoshinji temple complex.
In the same year he joined Otani University, he and his wife, Beatrice, founded the Eastern Buddhist Society; the Society is focused on Mahayana Buddhism and offers lectures and seminars, and publishes a scholarly journal, The Eastern Buddhist.

Shunkoin temple, which is located in the north part of Myoshinji temple *¹, was established by Yoshiharu Horio in 1590.
Yoshiharu Horio built this temple for his son, Kinsuke Horio (he died in the Battle of Odawara in 1589), and Yoshiharu’s ancestors.
When Ishikawa clan became a patron of this temple, Noriyoshi changed the temple’s name from “Shungenin” to “Shunkoin” (it literally means a ray of light in the spring).

    On Dec 5th, at Myoshinji Temple in San Francisco, U.S.A., the ceremony in celebration of Myoshinji’s twentieth anniversary was conducted solemnly and magnificently.
    Myoshinji Temple was established on Sept. 3rd, 1984, when the High Priest Nikken Shonin conducted the ceremony for the completion of the temple construction and the enshrining of the Gohonzon.
Chief Priest Rev. Shogu Kimura solemnly conducted Kenzen, the recitation of the Sutra, and chanting Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo.

In 1982, on his twenty-sixth birthday, he was ordained as a Buddhist clergyman by Zen master NAKAMURA Sojun, chief abbot and master at the monks' training hall of Daitokuji temple, and received from him the Buddhist names and title Zabosai Genmoku Soshi koji.
Later, he undertook training under Zen master MORINAGA Soko of Myoshinji temple, and he has now become the resident abbot of Kyoshin'an, a temple of the Myoshinji branch of the Rinzai Zen sect.

It is ironic, even tragic, that while Gakkai members completely dedicated themselves to commemorating the 700th anniversary of the head temple last year, contributing their time, effort, skills and money, Operation C (its stated goal being the destruction of the Soka Gakkai) was being planned within the ranks of the priesthood.
But it is clear to me that the temple has intentionally avoided every significant opportunity to work out this situation as equals.

 More Than You Want To Know
That’s not too different than the temple, but the nice thing is this place is more centrally located and there’s no curfew.
After a long day of touring though, it’s not too hard to turn in early, and the rare opportunity to spend a night among beautiful grounds is definately worth it.
The nice thing about this particular location is that you’re staying in an actual temple instead of a youth hostel-ish facility as with many other temples.
