Ba1 is a member of the Myoviridae family of phage, those that have icosohedral (20 triangular faces) heads and contractile tails.
The head is ~53nm in diameter and the extended tail length is ~85 nm.
Southern analysis using one of the temperate phage, Ba8, showed that the DNA is not similar to that of Ba1.

The genomes of the Myoviridae constitute a rich, and yet largely unexplored, genetic pool for proteins that play a wide variety of biological roles.

Here we report the isolation of cyanophages that infect Prochlorococcus, and show that although some are host-strain-specific, others cross-infect with closely related marine Synechococcus as well as between high-light- and low-light-adapted Prochlorococcus isolates, suggesting a mechanism for horizontal gene transfer.

Trials were conducted to evaluate the potential for using bacteriophages to control Salmonella in sprouting seeds.
Two phages (Phage-A, capable of lysing S. Typhimurium and S. Enteritidis, and Phage-B, capable of lysing S. Montevideo) were isolated and characterized as members of the Myoviridae and Siphoviridae families, respectively.
Salmonella counts increased in all inoculated seeds during soaking and mustard seeds supported greater growth of the inoculated Salmonella than broccoli seeds.

We propose that the phiKZ, Lin21, NN, PTB80 and Lin68 phages can be included in a new phiKZ genus, and that the EL and RU phages belong to a separate genus within the Myoviridae family.
Based on the resistance to many restriction enzymes and the transduction ability, there are indications that over the long pathway of evolution, the phiKZ-like phages probably inherited the capacity to infect different bacterial species.
