Myra Breckinridge Movie Review at Hollywood Video
Whether or not you agree with the clearly delusional Sarne that Myra Breckinridge was "ahead of its time," one thing is certain: you won't forget this bizarre film, which also stars Mae West, looking positively mummified as she reels off double-entendres to a bevy of hunky extras.
As Buck schemes to thwart Myra's plans to collect her money, she embarks on her ultimate goal of seducing and destroying those All-American ideals, the macho Rusty (Roger Herren) and his dumb Blonde girlfriend Mary Ann (Farrah Fawcett!) while Myron looks on from the sidelines.
Myra Breckinridge tries hard to be hip and groovy, but it's ultimately nonsensical, like so many of the "counter-culture" movies the studios made in the late '60s to woo the youth market.

 Myra Breckenridge
Myra Breckinridge is one of those stupefying cinematic experiences that makes one say, "My god, what were they thinking?" over and over like a mantra.
Because she was "enhancing" the gender she was born with and attempting to roll back the clock--both approved of by the social norms of Hollywood, California, and America in general, she was free to do this as she saw fit.
If Myra Breckinridge is palatable at all, it is because of Raquel Welch, who was at the height of her beauty and sex appeal when this film was made and was kitted out with the most flattering wardrobe she ever wore.

The humor in "Myra Breckinridge" is wildly over-the-top, most notoriously when the title character asserts her domination over a muscular stud by tying him down to a table and sodomizing him with a dildo.
Welch's Myra babbles about the glamour and glory of old-time Hollywood, yet her wickedly insincere delivery is clearly a parroting of canned platitudes harvested by studio publicists and swallowed by a population which did not know any better.

A lot of the movie’s problems are displayed in the most notorious scene, where Myra exacts her revenge on mankind, in the form of Rusty (Roger Herren, who apparently has never made a film since).

Myra Breckinridge is certainly no neglected masterpiece, nor even a particularly good film, but the years have been kind to it as they have to Fox’s other MPAA X-rated bomb of around the same time, Beyond the Valley of the Dolls.

Magellan's Log: Myra Breckinridge: An American Epiphany Part 2
Myra’s vision extends far beyond the verbal placeboes of orthodox psychotherapy, beyond the behavioral placeboes of such "pioneers" as Fritz Perls and William Schultz into that shadow realm of ultimate treatment so rich with the chance of extensive malpractice litigation: intimate involvement with the patient.
Myra as the ultimate behaviorist knows that standard-received masculine behavior can not be changed by suasion; she knows that psychoanalysis, T-Groups, sensitivity training, Gestalt therapy, inhibited Rolflng (with underwear on!), etc., all do little more than put a sugary coating over the noxious and furious programs governing all our perverse, internecine sexual-political behavior.
True, Myra is living out her fantasies (warped or not), but there's one so big that she only brushes it (is it perhaps the only healthy fantasy left to us?).

This is extraordinary, since 'Myra Breckinridge' is a genuinely radical and subversive novel that strikes forcibly at the very heart of traditional American values, particularly at the country's conservative sexual mores, though most readers seem to miss the 'unacceptable truth' that the book shrewdly exposes.
Thus Myra, "goddess enthroned and all-powerful," has achieved one of her primary goals: "that is woman's role, to make the wound and then heal it." Myra, who has been reborn several times herself, provides Rusty with a reawakening and second birth, one that would very likely never have occurred without her sadistic intervention.
Myra is run over by an automobile driven by one of her enemies, awakens badly injured in a hospital, and, via a process never made clear to the reader, psychically reverts back to Myron Breckinridge, the man she was before physically altering genders via an operation in Denmark.

 filmcritic.com Movie Review: Myra Breckinridge
Myra (Racquel Welch) is formerly Myron (Rex Reed), transformed thanks to a sex-change operation in Europe and arriving in California with a man-hating attitude: “I am Myra Breckinridge whom no man will ever possess,” she proclaims in voiceover, before meeting with her wealthy uncle Buck Loner (John Huston), who runs an acting school.
Myra marks Hollywood’s exciting transition into the ‘70s, led by Midnight Cowboy, Taxi Driver, and Joe, and defenders of it in recent years have argued that it belongs in that league; Myra, they say, was unfairly slammed upon its release because critics simply couldn’t groove to its hip swing.
Here, we’re supposed to read lots of messages into the film’s penultimate scene between Myra and Rusty, where she deploys a dildo to “educate you – you and the rest of America!” The film and its purported message are just like the monster between Welch’s legs: A big fat fake.

One characteristic of Benderson's Myra that I don't think one finds in Paglia is that she slutted around quite a bit, taking as many as five college boys at a time.
Here, again, is evidence to me that Benderson was thinking of Paglia in writing of Myra, with this clearly intended as a joke, playing on Paglia's fascination with whore-power and perhaps alluding to a persona she may have taken on at times for camp.
