 filmcritic.com Movie Review: Myra Breckinridge
Myra (Racquel Welch) is formerly Myron (Rex Reed), transformed thanks to a sex-change operation in Europe and arriving in California with a man-hating attitude: “I am Myra Breckinridge whom no man will ever possess,” she proclaims in voiceover, before meeting with her wealthy uncle Buck Loner (John Huston), who runs an acting school.
Here, we’re supposed to read lots of messages into the film’s penultimate scene between Myra and Rusty, where she deploys a dildo to “educate you – you and the rest of America!” The film and its purported message are just like the monster between Welch’s legs: A big fat fake.

A lot of the movie’s problems are displayed in the most notorious scene, where Myra exacts her revenge on mankind, in the form of Rusty (Roger Herren, who apparently has never made a film since).

Sex Goddess Raquel Welch was at the height of her big-screen fame when she starred as Myra in this offbeat cult favorite - considered one of the most notorious films ever released by a major studio.
Adapted from the bestselling novel by Gore Vidal (who later denounced the film), it starred an oddball ensemble of legendary old-time Hollywood stars (Mae West, John Huston) and promising newcomers (Farrah Fawcett, Tom Selleck) and featured film critic and non-actor Rex Reed in a pivotal leading role.

The DVD Journal Quick Reviews: Myra Breckinridge
Ostensibly the tale of Myron Breckinridge (Rex Reed), who, after a sex change operation, becomes Myra Breckinridge and heads to Hollywood to bilk his/her uncle Buck Loner (John Huston) out of his fortune, Sarne adopts a distractingly smug, wink/nudge approach that undercuts any potentially incisive satire.
Passing through the film's fractured narrative are any number of aging movie stars, including a haggard John Carradine as the surgeon who transforms Myron into Myra, Andy Devine as Cowboy Bill, and Mae West, who tips the whole endeavor hopelessly into camp whenever she appears as casting agent Leticia Van Allen.
Gore Vidal's Myra Breckinridge (1970) is just another wild sexual odyssey that couldn't make the transition from page to screen.

 Film Threat - Reviews
The humor in "Myra Breckinridge" is wildly over-the-top, most notoriously when the title character asserts her domination over a muscular stud by tying him down to a table and sodomizing him with a dildo.
Even at this late date, "Myra Breckinridge" continues to create embarrassment for its studio, 20th Century Fox.
When viewed by contemporary standards (or the lack thereof), "Myra Breckinridge" is not only quite tame but also a work which was clearly three decades ahead of its time.

Whether or not you agree with the clearly delusional Sarne that Myra Breckinridge was "ahead of its time," one thing is certain: you won't forget this bizarre film, which also stars Mae West, looking positively mummified as she reels off double-entendres to a bevy of hunky extras.
Myra Breckinridge tries hard to be hip and groovy, but it's ultimately nonsensical, like so many of the "counter-culture" movies the studios made in the late '60s to woo the youth market.
The notorious X-rated bomb that nearly sank Twentieth Century Fox in 1970, Myra Breckinridge is a special brand of awful.

Myra Breckinridge is no doubt one of those 'bad' films.
Unfortunately, between Myra's one-note legal feud between Buck, and her seduction of Rusty and Mary Ann - this forms the basis of most of the 'drama' in the film.
However, Myra's second and more ambitious plan is 'The destruction of the last vestigial traces of traditional manhood', so that she may 'realign the sexes' - - - thus saving humanity from the population explosion.

Myra Breckinridge is certainly no neglected masterpiece, nor even a particularly good film, but the years have been kind to it as they have to Fox’s other MPAA X-rated bomb of around the same time, Beyond the Valley of the Dolls.
Myra Breckinridge was released in 1970 to stinking reviews and poor box office but over the years has developed a cult following as a camp classic.
Viewers of Myra Breckinridge were treated to the rape of a man by a woman wearing an unseen dildo, albeit played for laughs — a pioneering male rape, predating the far more serious one in Deliverance.

Myra appears at the door of former cowboy star-turned-acting school entrepreneur Buck Loner (John Huston), who also happened to be Myron's uncle; Myra insists she's Myron's widow and demands her fair share of Loner's inheritance to her late husband.

On Fox Home Entertainment's DVD of Myra Breckinridge, two versions of the film appear; the theatrical release and a "special edition." Sarne talks over the latter, and Raquel Welch has her own commentary on the theatrical.
Francis Coppola 's One From the Heart (1982) and Michael Sarne' s Myra Breckinridge (1970) probably don't have much in common except they each marked the end of their respective eras.
Mike Sarne is wackily engaging, and seems to be watching a completely different film to the rest of us.

Neither commentary is particularly enlightening--director Michael Sarne primarily seems intent on settling old scores with Gore Vidal Rex Reed, and the studio, while Raquel Welch's arch (and largely meaningless) asides seem to suggest she's revisiting the film over a bottle of wine.
The only differences between the theatrical and "special" versions are a black-and-white ending in the latter, and the odd substitution of a Oliver Hardy film clip (he's seen opening an exploding champagne bottle) for the cannon fire clip that followed Rex Reed's auto/erotic climax in the release version.
This was her first color film ever, and after a long hiatus from the silver screen.
