Myrceugenia - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Myrceugenia is a genus of evergreen woody flowering trees and shrubs belonging to the Myrtle family, Myrtaceae.
The genus is native to South America from southeast Brazil south to southern Chile; it is closely related to the genus Luma; some botanists include Myrceugenia in that genus.
Two species are endemic to the Juan Fernández Islands in the Pacific ocean west of the Chilean coast.

Below about 500 m altitude small patches of dry forest (Myrceugenia and Fagara) and extensive grasslands, including many introduced species, are found (Figure 2B).
At higher altitudes the open ridges and ravines are subject to more humid conditions and can support montane forests that is abundant in ferns (Figure 3).
The strong regional input of Myrceugenia and Fagara pollen from lower altitudes, suggests that lower montane forests were much more extensive at this time.

 AndeanOdyssey
The flora present is noteworthy for being largely endemic (70%), that is to say, exclusive of the island.
Such is the case of the Juan Fernández apple tree, "coralillo", the cabbage of Juan Fernández, the cinnamon tree of Juan Fernández, the "narnjillo" (similar to the eggplant), the "chonta" (a type of palm), "luma" (Myrceugenia fernandeziana), wool grass, "the mayu monte", the "madera dura", and various climbing ferns.
Its fauna is also characterized by species that we can only find on the Island.

CPD: South America, Site SA45, Temperate Rain Forest, Chile
Around 45°S, an area under imminent threat due to recent construction of penetration routes, the rain forest has some 20 species of trees and a rich vine flora.
The largest woody family is Myrtaceae (15 spp.); the largest tree genus is Nothofagus (Fagaceae) (7 spp.); followed by Lomatia (Proteaceae) (3 spp.); and then Podocarpus (Podocarpaceae), Amomyrtus and Myrceugenia (Myrtaceae) and Maytenus (Celastraceae) (2 spp.
Total species richness in the Chilean cool-temperate rain forest far exceeds that reported in the much smaller area of such rain forest in Tasmania (Jarman, Kantvilas and Brown 1991).
