During a research trip to the Old World tropics during January to April 1977, I was allowed by M. Peyrieras, of the Institut de Recherche Scientifique of the Malagasy Republic in Tananarive, to sort through some berlesates of humus and leaf litter collected by him in various parts of Madagascar.
Thus, it falls among the mass of generic complexes related to Myrmica, Pheidole, Myrmecina, Rogeria, etc., among which tribal boundaries are impossible to define for the present, or at least are in dispute.
Considering the revisionary work that must be done before we have a rational tribal classification of Myrmicinae, it seems to me that nothing would be gained by erecting a new tribe for Pilotro- chus, even though for the time being I am able to fit it comfortably into any existing myrmicine tribe.

CSIRO PUBLISHING - Australian Journal of Zoology
Current classifications of subfamily Myrmicinae stem from the work of Emery, most recently formulated in 1922.
With the exception of a few well-defined tribes, the remainder (and bulk) of the Myrmicinae is composed of alarge group of genera exhibiting close phyletic relationships and many bewildering series of convergences.
The old conventional tribal groupings prove to have little utility, and pending a re-examination of the remainder of the Myrmicinae, the use of informal genus groups is recommended.

If Paedalgus is known only from South America, continental Africa and Sri Lanka, we may hypotethize that the ancestor of the genus lived in Gondwana before the split of Africa and South America.
If the distribution of Paedalgus is a product of vicariance, these ants (and Myrmicinae as well) could be a very ancient group, living in the Southern Hemisphere during early Cretaceous, at or before the time of the oldest known ants (Grimaldi and Agosti 2000).
