Topic: Myrsinaceae

 Flowering Plant Families, UH Botany
The Myrsinaceae are trees or shrubs comprising about 30 genera and 1,000 species.
This is one of several species of Myrsinaceae native to Hawaii.
As seen in the lower photo, this endemic Hawaiian species has greenish to yellowish flowers with sympetalous corollas and stamens that are opposite the corolla lobes.

 PBIO 450 Lecture Notes - Dilleniidae -- Spring 1999
The separation of Myrsinaceae and Theophrastaceae into the Myrsinales as done by Takhtajan (1997) is not significant and frankly of little value, the difference being that the myrsinoides are nearly always woody and have mostly fleshy, 1-seeded fruits whereas the primuloids are essentially herbaceous and have dry, many-seeded capsules as their fruit type.
The group may be distinguished by its half-inferior, many-seeded ovary as opposed to the Myrsinaceae (including Aegicerataceae, Ardisiaceae and Embeliaceae) which has a superior, 1-seeded ovary.
The Maesoideae appear to be the basal taxon in the Primulales and as such rather divorced from the rest of the Myrsinaceae.

THE CUTTING EDGE: January 2000   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
The dust from the frenetic era of Cyrus Lundell has finally settled, at least where Costa Rican Myrsinaceae are concerned.
When all is said and done (by Chico), we are left with a reasonable total of 60 spp., in six genera, in this undeniably difficult family.
Presented here for all the world to see, the sheer quantity of Lundell binomials applicable (mostly as synonyms) to Costa Rican Myrsinaceae is simply staggering.

 THE CUTTING EDGE: October 2000
The results, as reflected in six cladograms published here, portray both Myrsinaceae and Primulaceae as paraphyletic, but provide good support for Theophrastaceae and a monogeneric Maesaceae.
This decision necessitates changes in the circumscriptions of Myrsinaceae, Primulaceae, and Theophrastaceae, mainly involving the transfer of several herbaceous genera from Primulaceae to Myrsinaceae (thereby trashing the facile notion of Myrsinaceae as the “tropical, woody counterpart” of Primulaceae).
Among the new recruits in Myrsinaceae is Anagallis, the only Costa Rican representative of traditional Primulaceae, meaning that we lose a family from the flora.

After analysing a combination of nucleic acid sequences from the chloroplast genes rbcL, ndhF andatpB, Källersjö et al (2000) support earlier claims that Primulaceae and Myrsinaceae as traditionally circumscribed are paraphyletic, with (e.g.) Anagallis, Ardisiandra, Coris, Lysimachia and Trientalis belonging in myrsinaceous rather than primulaceous clades.
Rather than merging all the genera into one supposedly monophyletc family, Anderberg et al (2000) propose raising Maesa to family rank, and adjusting the contents of Myrsinaceae s.
