 Music of Puerto Rico
Musician, songstress, songwriter, commentator and producer, Myrta Silva, was born on 11 September 1927 in Arecibo, Puerto Rico, and was affectionately known as “La reina de la guaracha”, or “the queeen of the guaracha“.
Silva left Grupo Victoria in 1940 and went on to record with various well known bands of that time such as the orchestras of Moncho Usera and Armando Castro.
The talent of the beloved Silva was lost at her death on 2 December 1987.

Ruth started to gain popularity and in 1941, was signed by Columbia Records with whom she recorded her first hit song, "Cuando Vuelvas" (When you return) a theme written by Myrta Silva.
In 1940 she recorded with Moncho Usera and Armando Castro, but was better known for her performances as a club singer at the famous Escambr?n Beach Club.
In 1956, Silva started working in television in programs such as "Una Hora Contigo" and in 1967, Radio TV Mirror" which was honored as the best variety show in New York.

Bio: Talented Puerto Rican Isidro Infante was influenced as a child by listening to his father playing violin, getting involved in music at the age of 14 while participating in a band, which played songs by Santana and Chicago.
Two years later, Infante was in charge of the backround music for Myrta Silva's show.
After taking private piano classes, Isidro Infante studied at local Conservatory of Music, getting a master's degree in composition and arranging at Philadelphia's Temple University in the late '70s.

With respect to the history of El Conjunto La Sonora Matancera, Estanislao "Laíto" Sureda is a significant contributor to their legacy as he can also be heard to good effect on "Cañonazo", one of the theme songs of the group under discussion--sad to say, it is not among the live canciones included on this album.
Myrta Silva, the original female voice of La Sonora, really cooks on "Yo Me Voy Contigo", one of many compositions which she wrote during her career.
The excitement felt by the audience is palpable!

Neyra introduced Cruz to Rogelio Martínez, the director of the popular band Sonora Matancera.
On 3 August 1950, Cruz replaced Myrta Silva, who had returned to her native Puerto Rico, as lead vocalist of Sonora Matancera on their weekly show on Radio Progreso.
Cruz made her recording debut with Sonora Matancera on a 78 rpm single released in January 1951 entitled "Cao Cao Mani Picao" (later included on Canciones Premiadas De Celia Cruz, her biggest hit album on Seeco), with the flip-side "Mata Siguaraya" (later contained on Homenaje A Los Santos Vol.2).
