Topic: Myrtos

  Myrtos
Myrtos was voted as the number one beach by the public the last few years in the internet survey contacted by thalassa.gr.
We found Myrtos to be an excellent beach (one of the best we have seen in Greece) well worth a trip out of the way to experience its waters.
Myrtos is a very wide beach however and the rocks would never reach the part of the beach where most people sunbathe.

  The Early Minoan Period:The Settlements
More recently, the excavator has reported the Myrtos destruction dates to be 2850-2305 B.C. One possible reason for the foundation of the site in EM IIA is a population rise in central Crete which caused expansion to the east and the foundation of numerous settlements there (including Vasiliki).
Thus Myrtos appears quite closely comparable in terms of size, population, and length of occupation (three to four generations) to the typical Cycladic settlement of the Early Bronze Age (see preceding handout).
Myrtos was never reoccupied; Vasiliki continued to be a village for centuries but never again produced complexes as impressive as the Red and West Houses.

Secondly, Myrtos is surrounded by 500 foot high cliffs on three sides providing an illusion of seclusion you share with a few select fortunate souls.
Myrtos being larger is not situated in such close proximity to the cliffs so this is typically not a concern.

 Myrtos, Travel Info.
With each season Myrtos takes a different look; the winter, a regular rainy season, can be paradise for the tourist seeking warm weather (temperatures range from 15 to 20 degrees Celsius) and peaceful quiet surroundings.
All local and foreign visitors have gone home, and the swallows have returned; the tourist industry has shut down and the villagers now turn to their traditional life style of harvesting the olives, picking the oranges and drinking raki at the local cafes.
The village is now filled with local and foreign tourists for long endless days of swimming, sunbathing, fishing, boating, and fun!  Walking on the sea front at dinnertime you can experience the animated and often "explosive" talk of the Greeks in a wonderful contrast with the more "quiet" dinning of the multi-nation visitors.

Of the various sites that are thus identified as possibly falling within the territory of Malia, the relatively distant site of Myrtos Pyrgos stands out by virtue of its abundant deposits of pottery, showing very strong stylistic similarities with Maliote pottery.
In this study detailed comparisons of the MM IIB pottery from Myrtos Pyrgos and Malia (Quartier Mu) are presented, integrating typological, stylistic, technological, and compositional data.
It emerges that indeed much of the fine tableware is so close as to be practically identical; it is, nevertheless, made locally at each of the two sites.

 Fournou Korifi
This extremely important Early Minoan site is situated on the top and upper slopes of a steep hill, overlooking the Libyan sea, a few hundred metres from the present-day village of Myrtos and even closer to another Early Minoan site, Pyrgos, which lies between Fournou Korifi and the modern village.
It is important because it belongs to only one period of Minoan history -- EM II -- and therefore gives vital information about this period which may not be so readily available at other sites where EM II deposits cannot be so clearly defined.
Despite claims that the Minoans lived in peace and did not need to build fortifications, it is interesting to note that Fournou Korifi, like Pyrgos and Trypiti -- also on the south coast -- is built on the top of a small, but steep, hill with good views in both directions along the coast.

The Minoan Site of Pyrgos, Myrtos, Crete   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-29)
The valley that Myrtos lays in has been continuously inhabited for some 4000 years and Pyrgos shows evidence not only of Minoan settlement but also later Greek and Roman inhabitation too.
However, unlike a lot of other sites, Pyrgos never enjoyed a post-Mycenaean resurgence, and it appears that many of the inhabitants may have either been killed or fled permanently to the site of Phournou Koryphi some three miles to the east.
When the site itself was excavated in the 1970s, some seventy single-room houses were found, nestled on all four sides of the hills, as well as several public spaces on the south side of the summit and the western side.
