seahorse.org - Raising Mysid Shrimp as a Home Aquarium Food
The young Mysids are housed in the ten gallon rearing aquariums at a density of between 1200 and 1300 per tank.
Despite their widespread use as pollution bio-assay organisms, Mysids are not too demanding in terms of water quality (as long as the values remain within a reasonable range).
Some degree of caution may be in order as these butterflyfish attacked the Mysids with such ferocity that their snouts became bruised from repeatedly hitting the tank walls and bottom as they captured the shrimp.

Ecology: Mysids are small shrimp-like crustaceans found primarily in the Gulf of Mexico and the eastern coast of Florida.
In chronic toxicity tests, seven-day old Mysids are used to test survival, growth, and fecundity.
One to six-day (seven-day upon arrival) mysid shrimp are usually on-hand for immediate shipment.

 Breeder's Net
Male mysids are slightly larger than female mysids and are readily identifiable by their conspicuous absence of the white brood pouch.
Therefore, it is highly recommend to enrich both adult and hatchling mysids with Artemia nauplii fortified with marine fatty acids (such as phytoplankton-enriched or Selco® enrichment) for 12 h prior to feeding (see Breeder's Net column).
One of the keys to raising Mysids is to prevent cannibalism by separating the adults from the young.

The triangular trophic interactions between mysids, planktivorous fish, and zooplankton were examined by determining the portion of zooplankton biomass consumed by fish and mysids (direct effects) and the impact that the presence of predators has on the potential consumption of zooplankton by mysids (indirect effects).
Models developed for acoustically determining mysid abundance and for predicting mysid diel vertical migration were used in conjunction with bioenergetics and functional response models to estimate the consumption of zooplankton by mysids.
Although, mysids displayed a preference for a relatively narrow range of light and temperature conditions, their vertical distribution was found to be determined predominately by the position of the thermocline in the water column.
