 IGN: Myst IV Revelation Review
Adventure games (in the classic sense) have been on their way out of the market place for some time now.
Myst 4 on the other hand, takes you where most other adventure games haven't in a very long time: anywhere but wherever you happen to be playing it.
This isn't to say the game is perfect, as no game really is, but as far as adventure games go, it's damn near flawless.

Revelation is by far the grandest Myst game to date, yet it also feels most like the original from which it evolved.
On top of that, since Myst games have always been very Mac oriented, we wanted the game to be on a hybrid Mac-PC version so as to make sure that Mac players would have the same opportunities to play as PC players.
Our conclusion was that the atmosphere of the original Myst game was certainly one of the key factors that made that game so fantastic.

 UHS: Chemicus Review
The game is fairly non-linear (in that you can move about freely through all parts of this alternate world); however, the game will not allow you to continue to a point where you will need something that you do not yet have.
The only part of the game that became a bit linear was the end game -- and yet, the very puzzles that were being presented at that point had to be linear, due to the order in which things were being presented and analyzed.
The puzzles in the game are one place where there might be some contention as to the intuitiveness of the game.

Like its predecessors, Myst IV Revelation is a deliberately paced first-person-perspective adventure game whose controls are almost instantly intuitive--and yet its incredibly complex and challenging puzzles are about as far from instantly intuitive as possible.

Unlike last year's Uru: Ages Beyond Myst, Myst IV is not a fully 3D game, which means you'll be moving from node to node--from one picturesque scene to another--as you click around.

 Myst IV: Revelation review
Chronologically, this game comes after Exile; Yeesha, the baby at the beginning of Exile, is now a bright, engaging 10-year old, and Atrus (played, once again, by Rand Miller, CEO of Cyan Worlds) is starting to show some age, with a distinguished display of greying hair and beard.
To take Tomahna for example, the trees move in the wind, the waterfall is shrouded in mist (not myst, sic!), smoke rises from the kitchen, birds and insects flutter around the vegetation and scattered leaves blow in the breeze.
Part way into the game, you obtain an amulet of memories that is used to give plot and character developing colour, especially by allowing the player to hear the characters read out the contents of their various journals.

There were moments in both Myst and Riven (but especially Riven) of spine-tingling, near-emotional discovery that could give a player goosebumps; both games had a kind of completeness of underlying story (not to be confused with "plot") that caused the player to feel more like an archaeologist than a game enthusiast.

I wasn't playing games when Myst came out in the early 90s so but I've heard about what a gaming breakthrough it was at the time.
What Myst does not include is blood and guts and senseless violence, there is very little action and for those seeking a quick mindless thrill this is the wrong game to buy.

Myst, the Glass Bead Game and Universities
The only thing needed to make the future of computer game playing and the future of computer education one thing is a concept of gaming which extends as far as the concept of education -- and Hermann Hesse's Glass Bead Game does this.
A future Glass Bead Game with Myst-like properties could encompass the entirety of education, because (a) unlike chess it deals in the sum of human culture and knowledge while (b) its own skills involve a chess-like mastery: its game aspect stretches as high as its knowledge base.
The future of education lies in a Game involving mastery in the acquiring and manipulating of knowledges, both in depth within individual disciplines, and in breadth across them.

Apple - Games - Myst IV: Revelation
While the three previous Myst games focused on Atrus and Catherine’s family in some way, Revelation brings the obviously strained relationship between parents and sons to the forefront.
Miller and others at Cyan, the original developer of the game, set down “a certain number of rules [my] team had to adhere to,” Lord explains, “but within those few limits, we were free to develop our own ideas.
It was, however, of the utmost importance for all concerned that we produce a Myst that respects the spirit and lore of the previous games in the series.” Needless to say, Miller was happy with their work.
