The Book of Ti'ana is the perfect introduction to the back-story of MYST for three reasons.
First of all, it is the first of the three books chronologically (on the timeline, they read as the books of Ti'ana, Atrus, and D'ni), relating the story of Anna, the first human to contact D'ni, and her subsequent relationship with a D'ni lord.
MYST is more than a game in another respect as well now, with the publication of Myst: The Book of Atrus written by the game's authors, Rand and Robyn Miller, in collaboration with David Wingrove (author of the Chung Kuo series of science fiction novels).

The name Ti'ana meant "story-teller", and was given to her by Aitrus after she told him of human superstition of a subterranean hell — something Aitrus as an inhabitant of a subterranean Cavern found very amusing.
Anna (or Ti'ana( D'ni: Tih'ahnah / [Ti'ana]), as the D'ni preferred to call her, as it was more convenient for them to pronounce), was Aitrus ' wife and the first human to descend to the D'ni city proper.

In the third book, there is a mention that the Book of Terahnee had several passages written over and over, which the characters refer to as if the writer was "trying to reinforce the earlier phrases" to either make the age more stable or more specific.
Ti'ana tells the story of the downfall of the D'Ni.
Despite the title, the final book is not "The Book of D'Ni", it is "The Book of Terahnee".
