 Taxonomy
It can be argued that Maxillopoda should actually be dissolved into its four subclasses, Copepoda, Thecostraca, Tantulocarida and Mystacocarida, to make nine classes of crustaceans, but it is generally kept as a whole.
It is then broken down slightly differently, changing the number of orders to 42 and families to 849.
Mystacocarida are another plankton like group of minute, aquatic crustaceans who eat minute particles and form a basis of the food chain.

No consensus has been reached on the number of classes within the Crustacea and the relationships between them.
A similar temporary impasse applies to important issues addressing the monophyly of the Peracarida, the phylogeny of the Branchiopoda and the position of the Hoplocarida, Mystacocarida and Copepoda.
Finally, accruing evidence from molecular and developmental genetic sources of data appears to favour a closer affinity between Hexapoda and Crustacea, reviving the Pancrustacea hypothesis first proposed at the turn of the 20

Sample Processing: Major Taxa   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
Some animals, such as the larvae of some macrofaunal species, are referred to as temporary meiofauna, as they are part of the meiobenthos for only a part of their life-cycle.
Animals that are meiobenthic throughout their lives are termed permanent meiofauna, and in addition to the five phyla mentioned above these include taxa of Rotifera, Nematoda, Annelida, Platyhelminthes, Hydrozoa, Nemertina, Entoprocta, Mollusca, Brachiopoda, Echinodermata, Tunicata, Priapulida and Sipuncula, and several groups of Arthropoda including Copepoda, Ostracoda, Mystacocarida and Acari.
It is unlikely that the majority of these groups will be found in any one set of samples.
