  Film Reviews | Mysterious Skin
Mysterious Skin is a risk-taking film that dares to wed shock and tenderness in a saga of pedophilia and its aftereffects.
With Mysterious Skin, Araki achieves a synthesis between the generous spirit of his first two micro-budgeted, halting features (Three Bewildered People in the Night and The Long Weekend O’ Despair) with the expertise of his hyped-up journeyman efforts (The Doom Generation, Totally F***ed Up).
Mysterious Skin, though, avoids falling its own repetitious orbit by paying equal attention to the relationships the boys have to maintain to keep healthy.

Though the subject matter of Mysterious Skin is as sensational as that of Gregg Araki's other films (such as Totally F***ked Up, The Doom Generation, or The Living End), his direction is richer and more multilayered than ever before.
"Mysterious Skin" is likely to offend a lot of people what with it's human and kind portrayal of an abuser but Araki cannot be faulted for presenting the whole story: he shows us, let's remember...he does not tell us.

But in daring to contemplate the unthinkable, Mysterious Skin proves that it's possible to talk about pedophilia—indeed, to condemn it—without resorting to the histrionics of Fox News amber alerts, and furthermore to acknowledge children as sexual beings without echoing the rhetoric of NAMBLA literature.
Mysterious Skin keeps the boys suspended in divergent orbits, pulled along by their respective dysfunctions.
Mysterious Skin is at times slack and schematic: The narrative relies on convenient oppositions and symmetries to retain its double-helix form.

Mysterious Skin seems to signal that Araki is reaching maturity – and it is probably the film that will garner him some cross-over success: it has moments of beauty and genuine emotion, and the cinematography is beautifully composed, the antonym of the gritty documentary feel pursued by much independent cinema these days.
Mysterious Skin could have been a Todd Solondz film, the way it seeks to probe open wounds in a kind of picket-fence America.
I came out of Mysterious Skin with a full blown anxiety attack..To be sure it was powerful material but as for being a mature reflection about paedophilia I seriously have to disagree.

New in Theaters: Mysterious Skin - Cinematical
A deeply affecting adaptation of Scott Heim's 1995 novel, Skin is the perfect "comeback" project for the filmmaker: it allows him to show off his brilliant sense of design and expert handling of acid-tinged humor within the confines of a solid structure and fully-realised characters.
Skin tracks two boys, Neil (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) and Bryan (Brady Corbet), who at the age of eight experience a common incident of sexual abuse.
Mysterious Skin has all that, and more importantly, it shows Araki melding those talents more seamlessly than ever before.

 Mysterious Skin
Mysterious Skin was logistically a really complicated production due to its ambitious nature, tight budget and schedule, ’80s-’90s period, plethora of locations (rural Kansas and New York), challenges of working with sometimes very young actors, etc. But it became a pure labor of love for every single person in the amazing cast and crew.
We were all devoted to Scott Heim’s original novel and felt a huge responsibility to faithfully bring such a powerful, important and emotionally devastating story to the screen.
In the face of seemingly insurmountable odds, we made Mysterious Skin in an uncompromising, old school indie way—and it’s been the most rewarding, deeply gratifying experience of my career.

To sum up, Mysterious Skin is a gripping, moving film that definitely isn’t for everyone (woe betide anyone who goes to see it just because “Dawn from Buffy” is in it), but is unquestionably worth seeing for its performances and its uncompromising direction.

It's far too easy for an artist to gas up on dime-store victimology, or, worse yet, to keep his story running on the fumes of cheap pathos.
But Gregg Araki's "Mysterious Skin," which traces the intertwining but distinctly different strands of how two young men deal with their shared history of sexual abuse, doesn't fall into either of those traps.
But Araki doesn't make "Mysterious Skin" -- which was adapted from Scott Heim's novel -- about suffering; it's really a picture about getting on with things, about the freeing benefits of coming to terms with the past instead of being a slave to it.
