Mysterium_ by Robert Charles Wilson is a very well done, engrossing earlier work of the author's, one that I don't believe has gotten anywhere near the attention of his later works (such as _Darwinia_, _Bios_, and _The Chronoliths_).
In Mysterium, a possible alien artifact is taken to the small town of Two Rivers, Michigan, where a mysterious explosion somehow transports the entire population of the town into an alternate dimension.
Mysterium is the first work of Wilson's that I've read and even though the story itself could have been a bit better written, Wilson's ideas were extremely intriguing...I look forward to reading more of his work.

Mysterium (Scriabin) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Mysterium is an unfinished musical work by composer Alexander Scriabin.
Scriabin intended that the performance of this work, to be given in the foothills of the Himalayas in India, would last seven days and would be followed by the end of the world, with the human race replaced by "nobler beings".
The "Mysterium Chord" is almost a whole-tone scale but with one constituent pitch-class raised a semitone, turning the Fortean aggregate 02468T into 013579.

 GEORGES LENTZ - composer
'Mysterium', the seventh part of this cycle, is a conceptual work in an open form, consisting of numerous blocks that can be put together ad libitum.
While a performance, as opposed to a reading, might limit the infinite possibilities of the concept in terms of structure and timbre (as well as putting it into the time flow), it is nevertheless really the only way to communicate the work.
'Mysterium' is mostly soft, and tension results mainly from the polarity between sound and silence, tonal and quarter-tone elements, homophonic lines and complex polyphonic material, a regular crotchet beat and graphically notated rhythmic unpredictability, expanded and contracted time.

Ulrich's latest solo outing, 2005's Enter the Mysterium, is an incredibly lush recording -- chock-full of exotic instruments not usually associated with your typical rock bands (recorder, oboe, violin, etc.).
Recorded at his home and also at a few British studios, Enter the Mysterium would serve as the perfect soundtrack to a European marketplace before the advent of electricity (think one of the early flashback scenes of Highlander, and you're not far off).
On his second solo album Enter the Mysterium, former Dead Can Dance percussionist Peter Ulrich creates a rich, varied tapestry of medieval, folk, world, and gothic music that amounts to one of the most fascinating albums of the last ten years.

The opening pieces by Palestrina and Victoria sound unusual sung by an octet since they're so familiar in perfectly blended choral versions, but the hyperconsonance of the Counter-Reformation polyphony exposes the blends of the voice pairs in fascinating ways.
The album features a work by Nicholas White -- an attractive combination of tonal flavors that pairs well with the Poulenc but somehow lies too easily with the singers as compared to the rest of the music -- and concludes with a radiant "O magnum mysterium" by contemporary choral composer Morten Lauridsen.
This disc was nominated for a Grammy award in 2005.
