All over this smooth bay were groups of pigeon guillemots, fl and white pigeonlike birds, diving for fish.
Mystery Bay is said to have been so named because of smugglers on the island during Prohibition days.
Smugglers' boats could have been easily hidden in the overhanging trees at the small bay near the end of the harbor, and it's said that smugglers' regular disappearances here were categorized by the Coast Guard as "mysterious," hence the name of the bay.

Camp State Park always seemed cloaked in mystery to me. I'd driven by the park many times and savored the bay views from the road.
Like so many state parks, it was tough to find a comprehensive map of the park, and after looking at some partial maps, I never understood how the trails all fit together.
Although the park isn't huge, there are a number of loop possibilities, and hikes range from the short and sweet flat loop around Turtle Rock to a moderate climb to San Pedro Mountain's summit.

OLYMPIA — Mystery Bay State Park in Jefferson County is now closed to the harvest of oysters, despite information to the contrary contained in the Fishing in Washington rules pamphlet, the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) announced today.
Bacon explained that the local shellfish harvest is closed during summer months, due to contaminants from the park marina.
Signs have been posted at the park explaining that WDFW regulations prohibit harvesting clams and oysters during the off-season.

As we departed Shilshole Bay Marina in Seattle the July weather was sunny and warm, the winds light out of the north and the "SV Virginia" was under diesel power.
The crossing from Sequim Bay to our destination at Barlow Bay on the southern end of Lopez Island was four hours of sitting in the blazing sun listening to the drone of the diesel engine.
This turned out to be a super gunkhole as there were no other boats in the bay and that night the only light came from the first half of the new moon and numerous stars.
