  Review | Mystery in Space
Most of the stories in Mystery in Space are reprinted from DC's two most famous science fiction anthology series, Mystery in Space and Strange Adventures.
From the over-the-top space opera of The Knights of the Galaxy to the jaw-dropping nonsense of Ultra the Multi-Alien, there are universes of colorful concepts here: the low comedy of Space Cabby and Star Hawkins, the stoic heroism of Captain Comet, the deadpan melodrama of The Atomic Knights...
Mystery in Space skips from 1965 to 1980; in the intervening years DC didn't publish much science fiction outside of the superhero genre.

Don Markstein's Toonopedia: Knights of the Galaxy
The Knights began in DC Comics' Mystery in Space #1 (April-May, 1951), in a cover-featured story written by Robert Kanigher (writer/editor of Wonder Woman and DC's war comics) and drawn by Carmine Infantino (who had earlier drawn DC's Black Canary and would later draw The Flash).
Mystery in Space was editor Julius Schwartz's second comic (after Strange Adventures, which had started less than a year earlier) featuring 1930s-style pulp adventure sci-fi.
The basic pattern, in which the dashing young hero loves and is loved by the daughter of the local authority figure, is found in series as diverse as The Spirit and Bucky Bug.

Mystery in Space #1 Review - Silver Bullet Comics
When I first heard that DC was going to bring the Mystery in Space title back, I was under the impression that it was to be an ongoing monthly anthology of short science fiction stories by various writers and artists.
I was happy in my miscomprehension because DC hasn’t published such a science fiction anthology series since the Time Warp series (1979-80) that morphed into the 1980-81 revival of Mystery in Space that picked up the issue numbers from where the original series left off when it was cancelled in 1966.
The Time Warp and Mystery in Space series from a generation ago had such stellar creators as Mike Kaluta, Howard Chaykin, Steve Ditko, Marshall Rogers, and Joe Kubert working on stories at a time when all of them were at or near the peak of their abilities.

Apparently, unknown to the editors, Mystery in Space became uniquely sucessful due to it's long term hosting of ADAM STRANGE in the 1960s, not due to it's secondary stories and certainly not due to the few science fiction stories they reprinted from twenty years later when the magazine had virtually no circulation.
The stories range from the years 1946 to 1981 and include just about every DC artist, writer and character that was involved in their space comics.
Space Ranger, Adam Strange, The Atomic Knights, Tommy Tomorrow, Space Cabby and even Ultra the Multi-Alien are there, as well as a number of non series stories.

There was a run on Green Lantern a few years back that used those kind of captions a lot, and I can remember falling asleep while reading those, but I thought Mystery in Space kept the narrative focused on Captain Comet really well.
