Mystique (comics) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Mystique had concealed her superhuman powers and criminal intentions so well over the years that, as Raven Darkholme, she was able to rise rapidly through the United States Civil Service to the trusted position of Deputy Director of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) in the United States Department of Defense.
Mystique ultimately revealed herself to him, telling him that she was trying to relieve the tension between him and Rogue (because of the two being unable to have sex due to her ability to absorb someone's essence upon skin-to-skin contact).
Mystique is a mutant, a shapeshifter able to alter the formation of her biological cells at will and thereby assume the form of other humans.

 Mystique - MarvelDatabase
Arrested, Mystique's life was torn apart as the U.S. Government acted on their intel regarding Mystique and used it to destroy all of the alternate identities that Mystique had established over the years and arranging for Mystique to be unable to access any of the money she and Destiny had hidden away over the years.
Mystique's sanity was further damaged by the revelation that her lover and soulmate Destiny was one of the founding members of the anti-mutant conspiracy Mystique had dedicated countless years fighting and had willfully withheld medical treatment to mutant children that would have resulted in them not growing up deformed due to their mutations.
Mystique was hospitalized, where she told the X-Men that Destiny had predicted a dark future for mutantkind and that the future Destiny foretold kept on unfolding despite all that Mystique had done to prevent it.

Sabretooth and Mystique LS 1: In a flashback to the past, Victor Creed---a CIA agent---and Amichai Benvenisti, an agent of the Mossad (Mystique in disguise), are meeting Destiny at a rendezvous in Jerusalem.
Mystique expresses silent frustration that Rogue will not listen to her and indicates her inexperience at raising a daughter---which is simply wrong, as the two would have been living together for at least several years by this point.
Mystique feels it might not be so bad for Rogue to lose her powers, as she'll be able to have a normal life and return home to her family, though she asks Destiny what the best option is, and Irene points out that the decision should be Rogue's.

These instances are a far cry from the original comic book storyline in which Mystique heads her own Brotherhood, has only a passing acquaintance with Magneto, and is mother to Nightcrawler and Rogue.
During a period of separation from Destiny, Mystique went on to have an affair with fellow mutant Sabretooth and gave birth to a human son.
Mystique cared very much for her foster daughter, but their relationship was still a strained one, especially as Rogue joined the X-Men instead of remaining with Mystique's Brotherhood.

Mystique #4 Review - Silver Bullet Comics
Mystique is in Cuba to infiltrate a military installation housing older model Sentinels.
She’s not a conflicted character in the slightest, and that kind of unrepentant female is rare in comics.
We’ve seen Mystique get out of various “certain death” jams so far, and there’s nothing to suggest she can’t escape this one.

Comics You Should Own #2 » PopCultureShock
It also is an unusual comic book in that the Avengers are partly guest stars in their own book, the villains are more than capable to defeating them (and Rogue kicks the crap out of more than one Avenger), and the Avengers don't come off as the good guys in the book.
This is a very mature comic book for its time and theme (superheroes, after all), and it makes all the more interesting to read.
This issue also highlights her dependence on Mystique, something that would trouble her even after she went straight, as well as her insecurity, something it took her a long time to overcome.

If your break out hit in comic book writing involved collecting accolades from all over and winning universal acclaim, you might feel somewhat pressured to make your new high profile series from Marvel Comics be something different and un-Xpected.
But Mystique is more than just a series about a sexy heroine and more than just another X-book, explains Vaughan, and he contends that this series will offer readers a unique comic book experience.
I want our book to be accessible to anyone, whether they know Mystique from the comics, the movies, or the cartoons, or if they've never even heard of her at all.
