Originally, the Swedish king had little power, and it was restricted to the functions of a warchief, judge and priest at the Temple at Uppsala (see Germanic king).
The power of the king was however, greatly strengthened by the introduction of Christianity during the 11th century, and the following centuries saw a process of consolidation of power in the hands of the king.
The king was traditionally elected at the Stone of Mora, and the people had the right to both elect king and to depose him.

It wasn't until 6000 BC that all of Svealand and the modern coastal regions of North-eastern Sweden were free of ice, although the land was by then deeply pressed underwater.
Some of these kings were in all likelihood historic kings, although the sources sometimes give contradictory information, such as the death of Ottar.
In those days the kings were warlords rather than kings as we understand that title today, and what was to become Sweden, Norway and Denmark in a modern sense, were a number of petty kingdoms whose borders changed constantly as the kings killed each other, and had the local assemblies accept them as kings.

Semi-legendary kings of Sweden - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The semi-legendary kings of Sweden are the long line of Swedish kings who preceded Eric the Victorious, according to sources such as the Norse Sagas, Beowulf, Rimbert, Adam of Bremen and Saxo Grammaticus, but who are of disputed historicity, due to the fact that many of them appear in more or less unreliable sources.
The preceding monarchs are mythological in character and have been given a separate section in mythological kings of Sweden.
The names within parentheses are kings that are not mentioned in the recital of Swedish kings in Hervarar saga.

Norse mythology and Old Norse literature[?] tell us about their religion with heroic and mythological heroes; however, the transmission of this information was primarily oral and we are reliant upon the writings of (later) Christian scholars such as Snorri Sturlusson and Sæmundur Fróði "the Wise" Sigfússon[?] for much of this.
In addition the kingdoms of Norway, Denmark and Sweden evolved and it is to be believed that their kings wanted more peaceful circumstances.
This is a latter-day myth created by national romantic ideas in Sweden at the end of the 19th century, notably the Geatish society, and further imprinted by cartoons like Hagar The Horrible[?] or Asterix and numerous fictious movies.

It was first during the latter part of the 13th century AD that the crown gained a greater measure of influence and was able, with the introduction of royal castles and provincial administration, to assert the authority of the central government and to impose laws and ordinances valid for the whole kingdom.
Sweden suffered further territorial losses during the Napoleonic wars and was forced to cede Finland to Russia in 1809.

In sources such as Heimskringla and Ynglinga saga there appear early Swedish kings who belong in the domain of mythology, but it is often suggested that they have a historical basis.
It is, however, safe to assume that there were real kings of Sweden during this time, considering the fact that the concept of king was of Proto-Germanic origins (*kuningaz, a form borrowed by the Finns as kuningas) and that the Swedes were mentioned as early as 98 A.D. by Tacitus (the Suiones).
Later these kings were gradually succeeded by Swedish semi-legendary kings, who are more likely to have been historical kings.

This Sigriðr the Proud is an historical figure; she married Eric Sigrsæll, the king of Sweden mentioned here, whose dates are about 980—995; she intended at one time to marry Olaf Tryggvason, until they quarrelled over religious matters, and as a result of this she married instead his rival, Svein of Denmark (Tjuguskegg).

The names of Scandinavian kings are known only for the later part of the Viking Age, and only after the end of the Viking Age did the separate kingdoms acquire a distinct identity as nations, which went hand in hand with their christianization.
With the rise of kings and greate nobles and a quasi - feudal system in Scandinavia, they ceased entirely - in the 11th century the scandinavians are frequently chronicled as combating "vikings" from the baltic, which would eventually lead to danish and swedish participation in the baltic crusades

This King continued the work of conversion begun by his predecessor, and hence this Saga has for us a similar interest to the preceding one, although in a less degree.
This portion of the work is of no historical value, and, in a mythological point of view, it becomes absurd in the earlier chapters, where the attempt is made to establish the Ynglínga history upon the history of the Gods, and to connect the two by means of foreign, Græco-Roman ideas and traditions.
