It is hard for modern man, in a world where miracles are made commonplace through the dependable and proven disciplines of science and technology, to relate to the ancient mind-set, to grasp the feelings of awe the ancient man experienced when confronted by the forces of nature.
In this endeavor, it is important to keep in mind that the underlying theme, the crucial key to the various ancient near-eastern creation epics, that which explains the similar—and indeed, dissimilar—elements, is the mythopoeic approach the ancients utilized in the attempt to order and quantify their universe.
After all, given the facts about the tools the ancients had to work with, we might be less apt to condemn them for their mythopoeic approach; but in a day where science plays such an obvious role, we can not really apply a knowledge of mythopoeicism to any relative historical topics or problems.

When mythopoeic thought is combined with more abstract insights the results impress modern readers as being stories about the actions of gods.
We are not talking about the mythopoeic thought that sought to explain the discrete objects and forces in the human environment.
Primitive gods begin to appear in mythopoeic understanding when myths began to deal with whole groups of people in their unique socio-political environment as an abstracted unity, or being, with a human-like consciousness and a will of its own.

Hades and Hellenism: Underworlds of the Victorian mythopoeic imagination (Jane Harrison, Charlotte Bronte, George Eliot)
My term “mythopoeic imagination” identifies a self-consciously female form of narrative cognition that arose from the democratization of Greek knowledge and that defined itself in opposition to the institutionally-entrenched, masculine tradition of humanistic Hellenism.
Instead of promoting classical Greece as a cultural ideal, the mythopoeic imagination envisioned an archaic past inscrutable to modern reason and haunted by a sense of social and personal instability.
By exposing an interdependency between scholarly innovation and narrative imagination, this dissertation establishes a new context for the study both of Victorian Hellenism and of nineteenth-century popular culture.

There is a large and growing literature about mythology, but here all that is necessary are the points what will serve the purpose of distinguishing philosophical thought from the thought of people in earlier Middle Eastern civilizations (Egyptians, Babylonians, etc.) about the nature of things.
With the identification of the characteristics of mythic forms of human thought, it becomes possible to identify the unique innovations of philosophy.

 Mythopoeic Fiction
A word such as "Mythopoeic" is open to a variety of definitions (to say nothing of the even more elusive word fantasy, a word that may be, as the bibliographer E. Bleiler writes, "almost all things to all men" (Manlove 1).
In "Fantasy and the Believing Reader," Card argues that the essence of the fantastic is "belief," in that the fantastic is effective to the degree that readers become "participatory" and embrace for the moment the universe of the story--including the myths it asserts--and allow the story to change them.
Paradoxically, this attempt is made easier by the fact that, while the word mythopoeic might still remain vague, abstract, even ambiguous, two of Card's three ways of believing are fundamentally mythopoeic.
