Mytiline is a bustling modern town with an attractive waterfront and lots of amentities - I even saw an English movie and after two months of travel that was a treat!
Another note: Consider carefully the days and time you choose to spend in large towns - consider if you can do day-trips, go to the beach etc. It is important because everything closes from about 1:00-5:00 (12:00-4:30 some places).
For example, today I am in Mytiline Town, I thought I'd have enough to occupy my time, but I am really bored today.

Mytiline, like Athens and many other important cities, is surrounded by seven hills.
As rich as Mytiline’s history, it is the Mytiline of today that holds the most appeal for visitors.
Plus, Mytiline is the birth place of Pittakos, one of the seven top ancient Greek Philosophers, as well as where the famous Greek lyric poet Sappho lived and operated her ‘school’ where women often congregated and shared Poetry among other social activities.

An amazing city full of life and surprises, and if you are someone with a long history of Greece, it may remind you of Athens in the fifties.
Mytiline is built upon seven hills and is full of history; it is perhaps the most culturally enlightened city in Greece, and therefore offers museums full of interesting remnants.
In the summertime the castle is used for performances of travelling groups of musicians, theatre, opera and art festivals.

Oct 6 2005, 11:17 PM I always thought that the laurel wreath was worn during the empire by the statues of the emperors as a mimic of Julius Caesar.
Caesar looked for every excuse to wear his corona civica which he earned by single-handedly protecting a soldier during the siege of Mytiline (I think?) Later emperors constantly sought to prove connection and emulate Caesar, and so wearing that readily recognizable wreath became an icon.

At first, as a part of Coele-Syria, it passed naturally into the possession of Laomedon of Mytiline.
Seleucus I, who founded Antioch about 300 B.C., attracted the Jews to his new capital by granting them equal rights with his Greek subjects; and thence they gradually extended into the principal cities of Asia Minor.
