N ray - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The so-called N rays (or N-rays) were a phenomenon described by French scientist René-Prosper Blondlot but subsequently found to be illusory.
France was defeated by the Germans in 1870, and after the major discovery by Wilhelm Röntgen of the X Ray the race was on for new discoveries.
N rays were cited as an example of pathological science by Irving Langmuir.

 Rene Blondlot: N-Rays
A horizontal pencil of N rays, concentrated by a lens, was made to impinge on the under face of the sheet, so as to produce a focus at the heated spot; on the upper face the incandescent patch was observed without interposing ground glass.
If, now, the rays are intercepted by interposing a sheet of lead or the hand, the small paper rectangle is seen to darken, and its contours to lose their sharpness; the light diffused by the slip of paper is thus increased by the action of N rays.
The N rays were produced by an Auer burner enclosed in a lantern, and after passing through one of the sides of the lantern, formed by a sheet of aluminum, were concentrated by a quartz lens upon phosphorescent calcium sulfide.

The so-called N rays (or N-rays) were a phenomenon described by French scientist René-Prosper Blondlot, subsequently shown to be illusory.
In 1903, Blondlot, a distinguished physicist working at the University of Nancy, perceived changes in the brightness of an electric spark in a spark gap which he attributed to a novel form of radiation, naming it the N-ray, for the University of Nancy.
Blondlot, Augustin Charpontier, Arsène d'Arsonval and many others claimed to be able to detect rays emanating from most substances, including the human body.

help with refraction problem in my simple ray tracer (images/code inside) - GameDev.Net Discussion Forums
the way i dealt with this in my raytracer was to keep track of the medium of the ray at all times, aswell as the origin of the ray, which would be null for primary rays, or a pointer to the primitive it originated from for secondary rays.
if a ray hits a transparent surface, you cast one reflected ray which still is in the same medium, and one refracted ray, which will have its medium-bit flipped.
you find the points of intersection with the primitive, and you interpret them based on the knowledge of the medium the ray should be in.
