In the United Kingdom a scale of 1:148 is used for commercially produced models.
In the United States, a landmark N scale project layout, the Clinchfield, was built in 1978 by the late Gordon Odegard and featured in a series of articles for Model Railroader magazine.
The Clinchfield layout is one of the most famous American N scale layouts ever constructed and was awarded as the grand prize in a 1984 sweepstakes.

N Scale is a 1/160th scale replica of a prototype (real) train, building, person, automobile or anything else.
An N Scale locomotive is 1/160th the length, 1/160th the height and 1/160th the width of the prototype locomotive, and every feature (horn, bell air tanks, etc.) is dimensionally proportional (as close as realistically possible) to the scale of 1:160.
For reference, an N Scale 50' Box Car is approximately 3-3/4" in length and approximately 1 inch tall from the wheels to the roof.

O scale used to be called 1/4 inch scale with the ratio to the real thing as 1:48 with HO being 1/8 inch scale and 1:86 or 1:87.
With N scale, you can have those long trains like the prototype runs through landscape that actually dwarfs the trains if that is what you wish.
S scale narrow gauge is growing because you can put a nice size narrow gauge layout into a space not much bigger than a modest HO layout.

This helps tremendously as there is a lot less choices for N scale modelers as opposed to those who model in HO.
