Computer terminal - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A computer terminal is an electronic or electromechanical hardware device that is used for entering data into, and displaying data from, a computer or a computing system.
Most terminals were connected to mainframe computers and often had a green or amber screen.
Notable non-VT100 computer terminal types include the IBM 3270, various Wyse models, and the Tektronix 4014, but during the late 1970's there were dozens of manufacturers of terminals, many of which had incompatible command sequences.

TREATING SYMPTOMS AT THE END OF LIFE   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-25)
The end of life is finally being recognized as an important phase of life, one in which individuals have the right to expect quality of life and the opportunity to address key personal issues.
The end point of this research is to transform the selection of interventions into new standards of practice for the treatment of pain.
In cachexia as in other symptoms at the end of life, the nature of the syndrome suggests that it would be better to intervene earlier rather than later, for the sake of the patient as well as the effectiveness of the intervention.

 Peptide Sequencing and Synthesis
N terminus determination is commonly done by a process called the Edman degradation.
It now has a new N terminal amino acid, which was adjacent to the N terminal amino acid in the original peptide.
When this is done, we learn the identity of the second amino acid (from the N terminal end) of the original peptide and obtain again a peptide which is now two amino acids shorter than the original.

A targeting sequence of hydrophobic amino acids near the amino terminal end of the growing polypeptide results in the binding of the ribosome to ER membrane and in insertion of the polypeptide into the endoplasmic reticuluum.
The signal sequence is not at the N terminus and is not removed.
Notice that the C-terminal end of the protein is on the cytosolic side of the membrane and the N-terminal end is not in the cytosol, but on the inside of the ER, or organelle.

Advance Care Planning: Preferences for Care at the End of Life (continued)
AHRQ research shows that adults of various ages whose current health states ranged from well to terminally ill differed in their perception of hypothetical health states as being worse than death (Figure 1).
Patients were more likely to choose antibiotics, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, surgery, and artificial nutrition/hydration when there was even a slight chance of recovery from a stroke or a coma than when there was no hope of recovery (Figure 9).
The results of other research on preferences for care in the case of terminal illness conducted among the elderly, the majority of whom had chronic illnesses, are also shown in Figure 10.

ELCA Message on End of Life Decisions
Physician-assisted suicide (PAS) in Oregon is a legally defined set of procedures in which a doctor prescribes a drug for a terminally ill patient who then chooses when, or whether, to be the agent of his or her own death.
Physician-assisted suicide and voluntary euthanasia (when a patient asks another person to end his or her life) come very close to an overlap of meaning although they remain technically different because of the difference of agency provision of means in assisted suicide rather than immediate cause.
For instance, individuals may be or feel pressured, consciously or otherwise, to end their lives for financial reasons.

(see ref: PRO WB) It is essential that we know the protein quantity available for N terminal sequence protocol; we must know the first cleavage recovery, to check if the protein of interest is really sequenced or if it is a contaminant protein, especially when the N terminal end is blocked.
If the N terminal end is blocked we will not try to unlock it, due to uncertain success of such techniques.
For one sequence, the quantity required must be at least 1 picomole for a "sequencable" protein, Which means 2 to 5 picomoles (100 to 250 nanograms for a 50KD protein) for a N terminal sequence on 10 protein residues.

Principles for Care of Patients at the End of Life
In summarizing its role in caring for patients at the end of life, the AMA referred to the AMA/Robert Wood Johnson Compassionate Competent Care Initiative, whose goal is to ensure that practicing physicians are equipped with the knowledge and skills to provide the best possible care for dying patients.
For example, the APM states in its policy statement that excellent treatment of depression at the end of life often requires the use of controlled substances (psychostimulants), analogous to the use of opiate analgesics to treat pain.
Because ESRD patients who are forgoing dialysis usually die in less than a month, they are, by definition, terminally ill. The top left panel illustrates that proteins with a single (predicted) transmembrane helix tend to have the transmembrane regions at either the N- or C-terminal end of the protein; very rarely are there two large domains, one intracellular and one extracellular.
Proteins with 2 TMH's (inset) usually have a relatively short loop between the two helices; it is rare to have a large domain between two transmembrane segments.
Proteins that have large number of TMH's tend to have short loops between each TMH and any large globular domains are present at the N- or C-terminus (see 4 TMH plot in lower right corner).
