A dangerous bridge at Slane brings the road by the historic Hill of Slane, now home to the occasional rock festival.
From there the road crosses the border with Northern Ireland, becoming the A5 road to Omagh and Derry.

So far most of the interested or affected parties involved in the last round of the road saga have indicated that they are not against the building of the road but feel the prescribed process must be correctly followed and they would expect to have a say about the siting of the road.
The proposed road makes a lot of use of the current N2 and R61 but there are a number of new sections set to be built.

The controversial Wild Coast N2 toll road proposal is attracting international attention, with an influential group of US Congress members asking to visit the proposed route through Pondoland later this month.
Their request is revealed in an open letter to environmental affairs and tourism minister Valli Moosa by Vance Martin, president of the California-based conservation organisation WILD Foundation.
WILD favoured of a development plan that included a new national highway in the greater Eastern Cape area, as this would be a boon to residents and economic development.

Police investigating a case of road rage have appealed for witnesses to contact them after a motorist and his passenger - a top local musician - were shot at on the N2 last week.
Kobs said the incident happened on the N2 near Athlone shortly after 9pm on Friday as they were on their way from Gugulethu to the V&A Waterfront.
