Map of the route of the N3 The N3 is a highway in South Africa that forms a part of the National Road System, connecting Johannesburg and Durban, respectively South Africa's largest and second-largest cities.
From Johannesburg, the route officially starts at the Buccleuch Interchange which is the point at which the N3, N1, and M1 freeways converge.
It is possible to traverse the N3 route, and avoid many of the toll plazas by using the Alternative Route, ie Old Highway, by making strategic detours at key points.

Durban - A truck driver burned to death when the truck in which he was travelling crashed into the back of another truck and caught fire on the N3 near Ladysmith.
Thabang Chiloane of KwaZulu-Natal transport said the man, a co-driver, was trapped inside the truck when it caught fire around 05:30 on Thursday.
Chiloane said the N3 highway at Tugela River near Ladysmith was closed and could remain so for several hours.
