The men and women of NAS are active participants in their neighborhoods serving on community action committees and boards, as youth sport coaches, PTA members, lay leaders in their churches, scout leaders and as members and leaders of other civic and social organizations.
Both NAS Jacksonville and NS Mayport face community concerns for aircraft and helicopter noise; in both cases the concerns reflect the growing prosperity of the communities, which have permitted (in fact, virtually encouraged) residential development in waterfront areas adjacent to the air stations.
The NAS Jacksonville radar traffic pattern overflies upscale suburbs on the east side of the St. Johns River, while NS Mayport air operations, especially by the MH-53, are the source of complaints from newly established upscale communities on the riverfront northwest of the installation.

Jacksonville's Architectual Heritage by Wayne Wood holds a treasure trove of historical photos of Jacksonville's urban landscape.
While Jacksonville did not witness the bloody battles which ravaged the country during the effort to prevent its division and, ultimately, to end slavery, it was important to both sides as a southern port.
What later became NAS Jacksonville was known as Camp Johnston during World War I. The complex had more than 600 buildings and the second largest rifle range in the country.

 ATSDR - PHA - Naval Air Station Cecil Field (a/k/a USN Air Station Cecil Field), Jacksonville, Duval County, Florida
NAS Cecil Field was in operation (except for brief periods of inoperation) from 1941 to September 30, 1999 when operations ceased.
NAS Cecil Field is working with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) to characterize the environmental contamination and clean-up those areas which pose a hazard to public health and the environment.

Following his tour in NAS Jacksonville, Florida, he was ordered to NAS Keflavik, Iceland in April 1985 as the Flag Lieutenant and later, Flag Secretaiy to Commander, Iceland Defense Force, and Commander Fleet Air Keflavlk.
After training work-ups at NAAS Kearney Field, Calif.; NAS Hutchinson, Kansas ; and Kaneohe Bay, the squadron was redesignated Patrol Bombing Squadron (VPB) 104 and returned to combat in November 1944, resuming strike and reconnaissance missions from the captured airstrip on the island of Morotai in the Netherlands East Indies.
The squadron deployed to NAS Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, in late 1962 and again in early 1963, conducting quarantine surveillance and monitoring the removal of Soviet missiles and bombers from Cuba.

 Aviation Museum: NAS Jacksonville
I am really glad to see someone or group decided to transfer the historic aircraft from Cecil NAS to NAS Jax and begin an aircarft museum, and is headed in the right direction to preserve this history.
I believe it would only be fitting to now have each aircraft the team started with and used while its home was NAS Jax instead of just having the current aircraft on display at the main gate.
I used to live in jacksonville florida and I can tell you this much it is the best place I have ever lived.
