On 19 June 2003, a major restructuring of the NATO military commands began as the Headquarters of the Supreme Allied Commander, Atlantic were abolished and a new command, Allied Command Transformation (ACT), was established in Norfolk, Virginia, USA, and the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) became the Headquarters of Allied Command Operations (ACO).
Iceland, the sole NATO member that does not have its own military force (the Icelandic Defense Force being the US Military contingent permanently stationed in Iceland), joined on the condition that they would not be expected to establish one.

The former Allied Command Atlantic (ACLANT) headquarters in Norfolk, Virginia was simultaneously converted into headquarters for the new Allied Command Transformation (ACT) responsible for transformation and training of NATO forces.
The divisiveness between France and NATO’s military structure had been brewing for a number of years, as successive French governments had become increasingly incensed with what they perceived to be Anglo-American domination of the command structure and insufficient French influence throughout the command.
The headquarters' new home in Mons, Belgium, was the center of international attention from time to time as new Supreme Allied Commanders came and went, with one of the more notable being General Alexander M. Haig, Jr.

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) is holding an international design competition for the design of its new headquarters in Brussels, Belgium.
NATO is hereby launching a call for applications with the intention of making a preselection on the basis of criteria outlined on the competition website.
The competition is open to the 19 NATO member states listed here: Belgium, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Turkey, the United Kingdom and the United States.

NATO decided to undertake operations under Article Four to defend Turkey against the threat posed by Iraq’s weapons.
Certainly until this matter is resolved we will have to oppose any further spending for construction for a new NATO headquarters here in Brussels until we know with certainty that Belgium intends to be a hospitable place for NATO to conduct its business, as it has been over so many years.
RUMSFELD:  I think that’s possible and certainly a large number of NATO countries are already assisting and a number of others have volunteered to offer both, in some cases troops and in other cases various types of reconstruction assistance.

Following the end of the fighting in Kosovo, NATO reorganised its forces in the Balkans and on 31 August 1999 established Communication Zone West – COMMZ (W), as an allied force presence with a specific mission in Albania.
COMMZ (W) was disestablished with the activation of the NATO Headquarters in Tirana, on 17 June 2002.

 CNN.com - NATO headquarters get makeover - Jan. 25, 2003
NATO has named a British team of architects as the winner of an international competition to design its new headquarters.
NATO Secretary General George Robertson described the winning design as "quite remarkable" as he announced the decision in Brussels.
Work is expected to begin on the headquarters by at least 2005 and it is hoped the site, which is opposite the current offices, will be completed by 2008.

NATO headquarters went on alert Tuesday after a letter apparently containing a suspicious powder was delivered to the Western military alliance, a spokesman said.
The letter was received in the morning through the regular post, NATO spokesman Yves Brodeur told AFP.
Five people were killed last year in the mailing of letters laced with powder containing the deadly anthrax bacteria to US lawmakers and news media organisations, a crime that has not yet been solved.

At NTM-I Headquarters within the Cultural Centre Compound in Baghdad General Reith was briefed by IT Army MG Ernesto Alviano, NTM-I Deputy Commander, about the latest successes of the mission and future challenges.

Yesterday, Saturday 29th May, the third day of attempts by peace activists to carry out a Citizens’ Inspection of the NATO HQ and gather evidence of the possession of illegal nuclear weapons, over 60 people, including 5 from the UK, were arrested, bringing the total to over 260.
On Thursday, when NATO officials refused to give any information to a delegation of the activists, some activists began to cut their way into the complex to continue the inspection.
Yet, in the city that houses the HQ of NATO, which claims to be acting for democracy and freedom, straightforward dissent is banned.

I had the good fortune to visit NATO today as part of a long line of consultations with the Alliance.
I did, however, before I began my presentation, take the opportunity to say how important this Alliance remains to the United States of America and I was very glad that so many Ambassadors had a chance to say how important it is to their countries as well.

The traditional NATO Headquarters Skopje Street Party organized by NATO staff and Host Nation military personnel from the Support Co-ordination Centre attracted some 250 of their relatives and visitors.
