Minas Gerais operated normally until 1976, when she was overhauled till 1980, during which on 13 December 1979, she participated in the commemoration to the Day of the Sailor, presided over by Exmo.
Minas Gerais was downclassed to a Helicopter Support Ship in 2001 with the aim of eventual retirement due to being surplus to requirements, owing to the Brazilian Navy's purchase of the French Aircraft Carrier "Foch" from the French government for 80 million French francs (US$10.49 million)(ref: CNN.com, Nov 2000).
A ceremony was held in honour of Minas Gerais (A-11) on 9th September 2001, in the AMRJ (Arsenal de Marinha of Rio De Janeiro).

He apparently made this decision as part of an (ultimately unsuccessful) effort to appease the Brazilian military, although this was only one of many extravagant projects Kubitschek carried out (such as the establishment of the city of Brasília).
However as of October 2003, this bid was rescinded, and the Minas Gerais is currently set to be scrapped.

On Tuesday 16th October 2001, 'Minas Gerais' was de-commissioned by the Brazilian Navy and is currently at the Naval Dockyard at Rio de Janeiro.

Formal rescinding of HMS Vengeance/Minas Gerais ship ownership contract with H.J. Jienxiin (HK Jiexin Shipping) on 4 September 2003 according to Agencia Estado News.
Tragedy in July 2003 with crash of the HMS Vengeance’s former historic Fairey Firefly and loss of the two man crew of the Royal Navy Historic Flight (see information).

 Campaign to save the Vengeance
She was commissioned in the Royal Navy and served in the Mediterranean and Pacific in WWII.
She was subsequently loaned to Australia as HMAS Vengeance during the Korean War and finally sold to the Brazilian government where she served in the Brazilian Navy as NAeL Minas Gerais during the Cold War.
She subsequently remained there until she was finally decommissioned on October 16, 2001 and stricken from the Naval Vessel Registry, her fate unknown after the Brazilian Navy bought the modern aircraft carrier FOCH.
