Division I schools must meet minimum financial aid awards for their athletics program, and there are maximum financial aid awards for each sport that a Division I school cannot exceed.
Division II Division II institutions have to sponsor at least five sports for men and five for women, (or four for men and six for women), with two team sports for each gender, and each playing season represented by each gender.
Division III athletics features student-athletes who receive no financial aid related to their athletic ability and athletic departments are staffed and funded like any other department in the university.

NCAA Division I is divided into three sections depending on the competitive level at which a school plays football.
In Division I-A, football is financed and played at the highest level with 85 grants-in-aid and large, full-time coaching staffs; in Division I-AA football is operated at a lower, cost containment level with a maximum of 63 grants-in-aid, but at a level higher than in Division II which allows a maximum of 36 football grants-in-aid.
Division I conferences have taken steps to prohibit their member schools from competing against Division II schools because a loss significantly reduces their opportunity to advance to postseason competition.

The action academy was developed specifically for student-athletes at Division II colleges and universities in order to provide them with a forum to enhance their leadership skills and to become more familiar with Division II issues and solutions.

 Duma Qualifies for NCAA Division II Championships
Pittsburgh, Pa. -- The University of Bridgeport’s freshman Raluca Duma (Cluj-Napoca, Romania) continued her stellar season, becoming the school’s first ever NCAA Division II Women’s Swimming and Diving Championship qualifier, placing 5th in the Women’s 400 Individual Medley at the 2005 ECAC Swimming and Diving Championships held at University of Pittsburgh February 25 — 27.
Her time of 4:34.26 eclipsed the NCAA Division II automatic qualifying standard (4:34.29) by a mere.03 seconds.
Duma was able to virtually erase the disappointment of disqualifying out of the 400 IM at the Metropolitan Collegiate Swimming and Diving Conference Championships a week earlier with a flawless swim that dropped 4.47 seconds off her best time (4:38.73) of the season.

The title was the Grizzlies' 10th at the NCAA Division II level and allowed ASC to tie Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo for the NCAA All-Division record for the most team titles.
