He was named the 2004 NCAA Division I Coach of the Year after leading the Bears to their fourth national title in the last six years.
In 2001 the Bears finished third in the NCAA Championships at Lake Lanier in Gainesville, GA. The team compiled an 11-1 overall record and captured its fourth straight Eastern Championship on Cooper River in Camden, New Jersey.
In 2000, Murphy was named the Division I Rowing Coach of the Year by the CRCA (College Rowing Coaches Association) after his crew captured its second consecutive NCAA Division I Rowing Championship with victories in the varsity and second varsity races at Cooper River.

Veronika Platzer (aka "V"), a former novice lightweight coach of the women's rowing team at the University of Wisconsin, is in her first season both coaching Darden's advanced program and serving as assistant rowing coach to the UVA women's varsity crew.
A 1987 graduate of Grinnell College, V was a three-time NCAA discus champion in Division III and Division I. She was voted Female Track and Field athlete of the decade for Division III.
She was also a member of the 1993 World Rowing Championships team, and medalist at the 1992 Crash-B World Indoor Rowing Championship.
