Ncd is representative of a class of C-terminal motor domain kinesins (catalytic core found at the C-terminus of the polypeptide chain) that moves towards the microtubule minus end (opposite to that of conventional kinesin and other N-terminal motor domain kinesins).
The Ncd neck is a helix that interacts with the catalytic core on one side and with another neck from another Ncd polypeptide to form a coiled-coil.
This construct moved to the plus-end of the microtubule, indicating that the neck region, and not the core, was responsible for directionality.
