NCLS joins international research team to study spirituality   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
NCLS Research is joining an international team of highly regarded researchers with a proposal to map religiosity and wider spirituality in Australia, United States and the United Kingdom in 2005.
NCLS Research is a joint project of the Uniting Church NSW Board of Mission, ANGLICARE (Diocese of Sydney) and the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference.
NCLS Research also draws from surveys of the wider community and the national census to provide resources to assist Australian churches in mission.

The Uniting Church In Australia (Ncls Findings)
NCLS research suggests that churches that are missional, focussed beyond themselves and their own needs, tend to be more effective.
In NCLS research, a 'newcomer' to church life is someone who prior to joining their congregation was not regularly involved in a congregation elsewhere.
NCLS RESEARCH is a research agency that seeks to assist churches to move forward in mission and ministry in Australia, and to encourage the wider community to reflect upon its spiritual journey and the churches' place within it.

 Regional Snapshot
NCLS works with more than 25 denominations in Australia covering more than 7,000 congregations and connecting with more than 11,000 church leaders at denominational and local levels.
Their findings are of significant interest to anyone desiring to respond to the spiritual needs of their flock, and therefore NCLS is most concerned about the integrity of its research and its academic and intellectual honesty.
So NCLS is considering whether it could also offer several training plans that use the data effectively to benefit the local congregations.

Batten Disease Fact Sheet: National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS)
Adult NCL (Kufs disease or Parry's disease) generally begins before the age of 40, causes milder symptoms that progress slowly, and does not cause blindness.
Batten disease and other forms of NCL are relatively rare, occurring in an estimated 2 to 4 of every 100,000 live births in the United States.
Childhood NCLs are autosomal recessive disorders; that is, they occur only when a child inherits two copies of the defective gene, one from each parent.

eMedicine - Neuronal Ceroid Lipofuscinoses : Article Excerpt by: Celia H Chang, MD   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
Batten made the first clinicopathologic correlation in 1903 and referred to NCL as “familial cerebromacular degeneration.” Batten was also the first person to differentiate NCL from Tay-Sachs disease in 1914.
NCL was later so named because of the accumulation of autofluorescent lipopigments resembling ceroid and lipofuscin.
Although NCLs are generally autosomal recessive disorders, in 1971 Boehme also described autosomal dominant inheritance of the same disease in the Parry family of New Jersey.

Protein accumulation in neuronal ceroid-lipofuscinoses (NCLs)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
However, all forms of NCL are characterized by accumulation of proteinaceous material into neurons and subsequent neuronal death, especially in the cerebral cortex, which results in severe brain atrophy.
Based on the nature of the accumulating proteins the NCLs can be divided into two subgroups: one subgroup with accumulation of mitochondrial ATP synthase subunit c and the other with accumulation of sphingolipid activator proteins, possessing neurotrophic activity.
Interestingly, all human forms of NCL with accumulation of sphingolipid activator proteins seem to be caused by deficiency of a palmitoyl protein thioesterase.

Race: The prevalence of NCL is highest in the Scandinavian countries, especially Finland, where the estimated carrier frequency is a little less than 1 in 100 or 1%.
History: The NCLs originally were defined by their age of onset and clinical symptoms; however, they soon may be reclassified on the basis of newer molecular findings, which have provided evidence of far more overlap for the different genetic variants than what was previously suggested by the clinical phenotypes.

MedlinePlus Medical Encyclopedia: Neuronal ceroid lipofuscinoses (NCLS)
There are three main types of NCLS: Late infantile (Jansky-Bielschowsky), juvenile (Batten disease), and adult (Kufs' or Parry's disease).
NCLS disorders involve a build-up of an abnormal material in the brain called lipofuscin. The genetic structure of NCLS diseases are not known, but evidence suggests problems in the ability of brain cells to remove and recycle proteins.
The disorder may be evident at birth, but it is usually diagnosed much later.
