Sea to Sea Cycle Route - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The C2C was developed by Sustrans and part of the National Cycle Network (NCN) in partnership with various Local Authorities, Groundwork West Cumbria, North Pennines Tourism Partnership, Forest Enterprise and the Lake District National Park amongst others.
The route was opened in 1994 running from Whitehaven on the west coast of Cumbria to the North East coast at Sunderland.
The C2C is best ridden from West to East to take advantage of the prevailing winds from the West and the more favourable gradients.

The first section of the NCN to be built was the Bristol and Bath Railway Path, opened in 1984.
In some cases the NCN uses pedestrian routes, disused railways, minor roads, canal towpaths, or traffic-calmed routes in towns and cities.
Other NCN routes have two digits, starting with the number of the relevant main route.

NCN Route 1 goes up the east coast of England, entering the region at Redcar, coming up via Sunderland, crossing the Tyne at the Shields ferry and continuing northwards towards Berwick.
In this region you should note that the well known Sea to Sea (C2C) route, which predated the creation of the NCN and the numbering system, use bits of lots of routes and does not have its own unique number.
The basic NCN sign is shown top right, but you may see the white on red number in a number of formats, such as in the photograph.
