Native Command Queuing - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Native Command Queuing (NCQ) is a technology designed to increase performance of SATA hard disks by allowing the individual hard disk to receive more than one I/O request at a time and decide which to complete first.
Note that while command queuing can be a tremendous help if there are multiple outstanding I/O requests, NCQ adds a small amount of overhead to single requests, resulting in slightly lower performance on some single-threaded benchmarks typical of single-user computer use.
For NCQ to be enabled, it must be supported and turned on in the SATA controller driver and in the hard drive itself.

 V I P E R L A I R .com - Native Command Queuing & Seagate's Barracuda 7200.7, Page 1/4
NCQ is tied in closely with Hyper-Threading, and combined with HT capable hardware and software, the performance differences should be quite substantial when compared to non-NCQ drives.
NCQ drives don't mean much without a controller, and like the drives, the controller support is a little slim right now.
NCQ thrives on multithreaded and multitasking situations, and the truth is, not many desktop applications and games tap into this.

NCQ (Native Command Queuing) and TCQ (Tagged Command Queuing) Explained | Hardware Secrets
NCQ (Native Command Queuing) and TCQ (Tagged Command Queuing) are features created to improve the hard disk performance by re-ordering the commands sent by the computer to the hard disk drive.
NCQ was introduced with Serial ATA II, the same standard that introduced the new maximum transfer rate of 300 MB/s for Serial ATA, being targeted to mainstream hard disk drives.
NCQ can deal with up to 32 commands at a time, while TCQ can deal with up to 216 commands (TCQ hard disk drives, however, can usually support a queue of “only” 64 commands).

Seagate's Barracuda 7200.7 NCQ hard drive - The Tech Report - Page 1
Since support for Native Command Queuing (NCQ) distinguishes the Barracuda 7200.7 NCQ from its predecessor, it's worth taking a moment to examine what NCQ is and where it might improve performance.
NCQ allows a drive to gather multiple I/O requests and reschedule them based on their proximity to the drive head's position.
NCQ can only improve performance when I/O requests reference different physical locations on a disk, so it can't do much for streaming drive loads unless a drive is heavily fragmented.

Is native SATA same as ncq SATA - LinuxQuestions.org
NCQ (Native Command Queuing) is another name to queue a dozen jobs to the hard drive to access multiple files at once in a single head swipe.
NCQ can be later included with a BIOS upgrade, so you can pick any motherboard brand and model.
NCQ has nothing to do with SATA but it is a good feature for SATA to compete with SCSI.

HardAvenue.com - PC Tech and Hardware content
NCQ technology will provide a new advantage in today's systems with Hyper-Threading Technology, which allows multiple applications to send I/O requests at the same time.
NCQ will boost performance still more when applications take advantage of Asynchronous I/O. In addition, NCQ increases drive reliability in heavy workloads by eliminating much of the mechanical wear and tear that a non-NCQ drive must endure to transfer the same amount of data.
NCQ is a command protocol in Serial ATA that can only be implemented on native Serial ATA hard drives like Seagate's.

NCQ is designed to improve performance and reliability as the transactional workload increases - When your application sends multiple commands to your drive, your drive can optimize the completion of these commands to reduce mechanical workload and improve performance.
The results of NCQ are higher performance in heavy transactional workloads usually found in high performance workstations, network servers, multi-media servers and editing workstations.
NCQ is designed into the Serial ATA interface but not all solutions have integrated it.

AnandTech - How important is NCQ?   (Site not responding. Last check: )
NCQ is useful if you will be using those drives to host data that will be shared on a network by several computers.
NCQ is really there for lots of requests for data that would be scattered all over the drive.
NCQ certainly isn't worth $100 even if you did have a file server IMO.

Hard Drives with NCQ - ABXZone.com Forums
It is possible that some future bios might be written to provide NCQ support, but I wouldn't depend on that.
First of all, the supplied driver does not work to enable the NCQ, and last of all, NCQ made less than 1% difference having it on or off.
NCQ is not likely to be a huge benefit in a desktop environment anyway - it's geared more towards servers from my understanding.

Maxtor DiamondMax 10: Exploring NCQ & RAID - Hot Hardware
NCQ attempts to reduce latency and increase throughput by ordering the incoming read and write requests in the most efficient sequence to minimize head travel.
A drive without NCQ will read the data at position 20, and then wait for the platters to make nearly a complete rotation to read the data at position 19.
The NCQ enabled drive will rearrange the requests for 20 > 19 into 19 > 20 so the drive can read the data more efficiently without the additional rotation.

NCQ is probably not important for downloading stuff.

 What is NCQ
NCQ is the acronym for Native Command Queuing.
NCQ was not supported in SATA-I. Without NCQ, commands are performed by the disk in the order in which they are received.
If the commands are reads and writes of data scattered randomly across the disk, a lot of time can be wasted on long seeks (mechanically moving the head long distances) between successive read/write operations.

 Sharky Extreme
NCQ, or Native Command Queuing, is a feature that allows multiple commands to be queued simultaneously within the same physical drive.
What NCQ really does is provide a more structured and efficient method of performing disk commands, so that the physical performance of the hard drive is fully maximized.
The only real negative to NCQ is that it requires a compatible platform or add-in host controller, otherwise the NCQ feature will not be enabled.

Native Command Queuing (NCQ)'s impact has been something of a mixed bag when it comes to single-user performance.
Maxtor's MaXLine III (and DiamondMax 10) stands as the lone offering that delivers better single-user performance with NCQ enabled, though it is not clear whether this is because Maxtor's implementation is truly superior or rather because the company's drives perform unusually poorly without it.
Though the WD1500 remains a speedy unit when NCQ is enabled, we recommend disabling NCQ in non-server settings to obtain the best possible performance.
