Leadership Convention   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
A leadership convention is a meeting of party members to select a leader of the party.
While leadership conventions have compensated to a very substantial degree for the regional imbalances of the parliamentary parties, they have at the same time effectively ended the caucus's monopoly over the selection of a party leader, with a curious result.
The record suggests that the leadership convention process actually serves as a disincentive to those who might aspire to a lengthy parliamentary career capped by a successful run at their party's leadership.

Originally, delegates were asked to approve a resolution calling on the party to adopt a system of one-member-one-vote, which was intended to dramatically reduce the role that labour plays at leadership conventions.
However, the convention opted in the end to approve a compromise resolution proposed by former federal leader Ed Broadbent, reserving 25% of delegates for labour and allowing the remainder to be chosen via a one-member-one-vote system.
Meanwhile, delegates defeated (by a vote of 684 to 401) a resolution to dissolve the NDP and create a new party, with a new name, based on the environmental, anti-poverty and anti-globalization movements.
